The Nansen bottle/ primary productivity/ pigment, sediment trap; and Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) data were collected in North Atlantic Ocean, NW Atlantic (limit-40 W) as part of Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) project. Data was collected from Ships CAPE HATTERAS and WEATHERBIRD. The data was collected over a period spanning from October 20, 1988 and September 13, 1991. 13 files containing Sediment trap data (368 records); Primary Productivity Data (268 records); Bottle data (from 16 stations and 1,364 records); CTD data (95 stations and 52,635 records); and Pigment data (693 records) was submitted by Dr. Anthony H. Knapp, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA. Data has been processed and is available in F022-CTD-Hi Resolution file format of NODC. The Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS) is an international and multi- disciplinary study with a primary objective of understanding global oceanic carbon and nutrient cycles. The National Science Foundation has funded two time-series stations as part of JGOFS, one in Hawaii (HOTS) and a second in Bermuda, the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series study (BATS). BATS was funded under NSF Grant # OCE-8801089. This data set is comprised of BATS data primarily from Year 3, with additional data included from BATS years 1 and 2: 1) pigment data (chlorophylls a and b, peridinin, fucoxanthin, lutein, carotene, and others) collected during BATS Year 2 (These are the same data filed under NCEI Accession number 9200088.) 2) Nutrient data (total carbon dioxide, nitrate+nitrite, silicate, and phosphate in μmol/kg) collected as part of BATS Year 3 (Cruises 25 - 36, October 1990 - September 1991). CTD and particulate organic carbon and nitrogen (in μg/kg) and bacteria counts were also provided with these data. 3) Primary productivity data for BATS Years 1-3, Cruises 1-36. The trap array had MULTITRAPS at 150, 200, 300 and 400 meters. The array was allowed to drift for a 72-hour period (drift was considerable, up to 100 km). Total percentages of nitrogen, total organic carbon, and total carbon were utilized to calculate particulate flux in mg/m2/d. Data were collected in the immediate area of the nominal station location at 31 degrees 50'N, 64 degrees 10'W.

Physical, chemical, biological, meteorological, and other data were collected from bottle casts, CTD casts, and divers from FIXED PLATFORMS. Data were collected by Western Washington University (WWU) from 06 February 1989 to 12 March 1998. Physical parameters include water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and salinity. Nutrients parameters include concentrations of ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, phaeopigment, and C02. Meteorological parameters include wind speed, rainfall, and cloud cover. Skin diver data include sighting of juvenile rockfish, collection of sea cucumbers, and collection of green urchins.

The water depth and temperature data was collected in NW Atlantic (limit-40 W) from ships SKOGAFOSS, OLEANDER, and YANKEE CLIPPER as part of Ship Of Opportunity Programme (SOOP). The data was collected from February 6, 1993 to December 5, 1993. The originator's bathythermograph (XBT) data was received via telecommunication by National Marine Fisheries Service, Narragansett, RI. Data has been processed to the NODC standard Bathythermograph (BT) data format. The UBT (C125) format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data records are comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. Depths are selected by the originator - usually at standard horizons or some fixed interval. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. Special instruments permitted measurements to be obtained to 1830 m.

This dataset contains contains chlorophyll data collected from 1958-1988 using multiple ships. Marine pigments, productivity, and associated chemistry data were collected in NE Atlantic (limit-40 W) and NW Atlantic (limit-40 W) as part of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS). This data base has approx. 12,000 stations in JGOFS format. Any particulars on the station data can be found in JGR-Oceans, 97:2279-2293; titled The Remote Sensing of Ocean Primary Productivity. Data was submitted by William Balch, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), University of Miami. Also, these data have been copied onto CD-Rom at Goddard for distribution with the CZCS.

Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard Bathythermograph (XBT) (C116) format. The C116/C118 format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT Data File, in which temperature values were recorded at uniform 5 m intervals, the XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Prior to July 1994, XBT data were routinely processed to one of these standard types. XBT data are now processed and loaded directly in to the NODC Ocean Profile Data Base (OPDB). Historic data from these two data types were loaded into the OPDB.

Fishery survey, fishing duration and other benthic organism data from unknown and other platforms from North Atlantic Ocean was collected over four years between January 16, 1980 to March 14, 1984. The data was collected by Marine Resources Research Institute, Charleston SC as part of Living Marine Resources Study. The data was submitted by South Carolina State Wildlife and Marine Resources Department. Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard SD2- Oceanographic Station Data, F123- Fish/Shellfish Survey, F124- Zooplankton Data, and F132- Benthic Organisms formats. The SD2 format is used for physical-chemical oceanographic data recorded at discrete depth levels. Most of the observations were made using multi-bottle Nansen casts or other types of water samplers. A small amount (about 5%) were obtained using electronic CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) or STD (salinity-temperature-depth) recorders. The CTD/STD data were reported to NODC at depth levels equivalent to Nansen cast data, however, and have been processed and stored the same as the Nansen data. Cruise information, position, date and time are reported for each station. Each station contains the measurements taken at observed depth levels, but also includes data values interpolated to a set of standard depth levels. The F123 format is used for data from field sampling of marine fish and shellfish. The data derive from analysis of midwater or bottom tow catches and provide information on population density and distribution. Cruise information, position, date, time, gear type, fishing distance and duration, and number of hauls are reported for each survey. Environmental data may include meteorological conditions, surface and bottom temperature and salinity, and current direction and speed. Bottom trawl or other gear dimensions and characteristics are also reported. Catch statistics (e.g., weight, volume, number of fish per unit volume) may be reported for both total haul and for individual species. Biological characteristics of selected specimens, predator/ prey information (from stomach contents analysis), and growth data may also be included. A text record is available for comments. The F124 format is used for data from sampling and analysis of marine zooplankton. Information on zooplankton abundance, distribution, and productivity derived from these data support studies of marine populations and ecosystems. Data reported may include: cruise information, position, date, and time of sampling; bottom depth, sampling depths, temperature, and salinity; gear type, volume of water filtered, total dry and wet weight, and other data for total haul; and data for subsamples by species. Data on zooplankton catch by species may include subsample size, zooplankton concentration, life history code, and numbers of adults, juveniles, eggs, and larvae. Estimated density of holoplankton and meroplankton and data on ichthyoplankton may also be reported. A text record is available for comments. Note: there are two options for reporting subsample counts of individuals at different life history stages. If life history codes are used, only number of adults should be reported on that record. Additional separate records should then be used to report number of juveniles and so on. Alternatively, life history codes may not be used and number of adults, juveniles, and so entered in the proper fields of a single record. The F132 format contains data from field sampling or surveys of bottom dwelling marine organisms. The data provide information on species abundance, distribution, and biomass; they may have been collected by point sampling (grab or core), by tow (dredge, trawl or net), by photographic surveys, or by other methods. Cruise information such as vessel, start and end dates, investigator, and institution/agency; station numbers, positions and times; and equipment and methods are reported for each survey. Environmental data reported at each sampling site may include
