The 2021 Offshore Greenhouse Gas Storage Acreage Release is a key strategy of the Australian Government to reduce emissions and support Australia's resource sector. The GHG acreage release will provide companies the opportunity to explore for offshore carbon dioxide injection and storage locations. The 2021 GHG acreage release consists of 5 areas across the Bonaparte, Browse and Northern Carnarvon Basins.

An output of this activity is the development of the Australian Maritime Boundaries (AMB) data. AMB2020 is a GIS data product, replacing AMB2014a, providing access to the data for Australia's maritime zones. Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Storage Act 2006 - Australian Maritime Boundaries Dataset 2020 is a digital representation of the scheduled and offshore areas defined under this Act. In the event of an inconsistency between AMB data and the limits under any legislation, the latter prevails. The data have been published by Geoscience Australia in consultation with other relevant Commonwealth Government agencies including the Attorney-General's Department, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Hydrographic Office. The AMB2020 version has been updated to reflect the 2018 Timor Sea Treaty, including the Bayu-Undan Offshore Area. The annual offshore petroleum exploration acreage release is part of the government’s strategy to promote offshore oil and gas exploration. Each year, the government invites companies to bid for the opportunity to invest in oil and gas exploration in Australian waters. The 2021 acreage release consists of 21 areas offshore of Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and the Ashmore and Cartier Islands.
