Food Webs of Prawns in Tropical Systems Dataset 1991-1995

Two mangrove sites and two seagrass sites were sampled in each region of the Gulf of Carpentaria; Weipa (between 1991 and 1994) and Groote Eylandt (between 1994 and 1995). The stable isotope ratios of seagrass, mangroves and prawns were measured, and the contribution of mangroves and seagrass to prawn food webs was estimated.

This data set contains Excel and CSV files containing fish length of Juvenile Reeffish. Trawls were made during the summer months in shallow seagrass beds to monitor the number and species of juvenile snapper using the grass as a nursery.

Maps showing prawn larval distribution of commercial and non-commercial species during both the wet and dry seasons in Albatross Bay. The data was recorded from stepped oblique bottom to surface plankton tows, 140-142um nets. Nine cruises took place between 1975 and 1977 on chartered boats and the "Kalinda". Prawn larval biomass and densities were measured in several transects across the Gulf of Carpentaria, as well as total plankton biomass. These maps have been produced by CSIRO for the National Oceans Office, as part of an ongoing commitment to natural resource planning and management through the 'National Marine Bioregionalisation' project.

Embley River Enclosure Data 1993-1994

Juvenile tiger prawns were collected by beam trawl in the Embley River, Gulf of Carpentaria in October 1993, March 1994 and October/November 1994. The following parameters were measured: prawn numbers, carapace length, species, seagrass, biomass, salinity, temperature and depth. Field experiments were carried out using enclosure nets.

Gulf of Carpentaria Adult Prawn Data 1995

Adult grooved tiger prawns (Penaeus semisulcatus) were caught in prawn trawls during one transect of the Gulf of Carpentaria on the FRV Southern Surveyor. The catches were used to assess offshore migration of the species. Data collected include length frequency, sex and gonad stage. Data were collected using 39 paired Florida Flyer trawls centred on 6nm grids across approximately 13 sites. The sites are spaced some distance apart along the cruise track (a transect from Weipa to N Groote and back to Weipa). The AusTED and standard codend were compared in these trawls, and the same data were also to be used monitor the distribution of Penaeus semisulcatus across the Gulf. Problem shots were retrawled when possible to meet the experimental design. Nine were abandoned due to lack of time.

Prawn Recolonisation Data, Gulf of Carpentaria 1984-1995

Juvenile prawn samples were collected by beam trawl at a number of sites between the Vanderlin Islands and Rose River (Numbulwar), Gulf of Carpentaria, to investigate the recolonisation of sand and seagrass habitats following Cyclone Sandy.

Groote Eylandt Juvenile Prawn Data 1983-1989

Seagrass aerial surveys were used to produce maps of the Groote Eylandt area. Samples of juvenile and sub-adult prawns were taken by beam trawl at Groote Eylandt, Blue Mud Bay and Sir Edward Pellew Islands under various sampling regimes between 1983 and 1989.

Distribution and abundance of larval fishes in One Tree Island Lagoon, Capricorn Bunker Group, Great Barrier Reef

Light traps were attached to paired moorings at each of nine sites in One Tree Island lagoon. More than 1200 samples of fish and zooplankton were taken and fish identified to species level. Sampling was done monthly over two consecutive summers (1993/94 and 1994/95). Simultaneous measurements of tidal flushing were also made. Light traps were anchored at sites inside the One Tree Island lagoon to match the locations of benthic recruitment surveys, which were being conducted at the same time.
