A Local Heritage List are places within local district which established or maintained under a local planning scheme. They contain properties for their cultural heritage significance. Places on a local government heritage list require special planning approval for demolition, additions and other works.

Since 1st July 2019, Municipal Inventory have been renamed to Local Heritage Surveys. This is a list of places within a local district which are, or may become, of cultural heritage significance. For further information about Local Heritage Surveys, contact the relevant Local Government.

When a place is on the Heritage Council’s Assessment Program, it means that the Heritage Council has an interest in the place and it will be assessed and considered for inclusion on the State Register of Heritage Places. The State Register of Heritage Places recognises a place's value and importance to Western Australia. It includes buildings, structures, gardens, cemeteries, landscapes and archaeological sites and has more than 1,300 places listed in it. The State Register is managed by the Heritage Council and provides a place with statutory protection to ensure that any proposed demolition, relocation, subdivision, amalgamation, alteration, addition or new development is in harmony with its cultural heritage values. The State Register continues to expand, as significant places yet to be registered are progressively assessed by the Council. A state heritage area is a clearly defined region with outstanding natural or cultural elements significant to South Australia's development and identity. A state heritage area is notable for its distinct character or 'sense of place', formed by: buildings and structures spaces and allotments patterns of streets natural features or the developed landscape. State Heritage Areas in South Australia have been designated under the South Australian Heritage Act 1978 and authorised under the Development Act 1993.
