High-resolution depth model for Northern Australia - 30 m
This dataset contains bathymetry (depth) products from the compilation of all available source bathymetry data within Northern Australia into a 30 m-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The Northern Australia region includes a broad continental shelf over 400 km wide extending out from Western Australia and the Northern Territory, and stretching over a distance of ~1500 km. This region encompasses numerous shallow coral reefs including the offshore Sahul Banks, sand cays, drowned ancient river valleys, broad inner-shelf banks and a rugged coastline. Bathymetry mapping of the seafloor is vital for the protection of Northern Australia, allowing for the safe navigation of shipping and improved environmental management. Shallow- and deep-water multibeam surveys have revealed the highly complex seafloor of the continental shelf and adjacent slope canyons draining into the Indian Ocean and Timor Sea. Airborne LiDAR bathymetry acquired by the Australian Hydrographic Office cover most of the Sahul Banks reefs, with some coverage gaps supplemented by satellite derived bathymetry. The Geoscience Australia-developed Intertidal Elevation Model DEM improves the source data gap along Northern Australia’s vast intertidal zone. Australian bathymetry and topography grid depth contours, June 2009 (eAtlas, source: GA)

This dataset contains contours generated from the Australian bathymetry and topography grid, June 2009 version 4 by Geoscience Australia. It contains depth contours for -20m, -40m, -100m, -200m and -400m. Contours were generated in ArcMap using the Spatial Analyst Tools / Surface / Contour List tool. This output was then simplified using the Cartography Tools / Generalization / Smooth Line with a tolerance of 300m. The rest of this documentation is based on the metadata of the Australian bathymetry and topography grid itself. This grid is available from GA at http://dx.doi.org/10.4225/25/53D99B6581B9A . In 2005 Geoscience Australia and the National Oceans Office undertook a joint project to produce a consistent, high-quality 9 arc second (0.0025 deg or ~250m at the equator) bathymetric grid for Australian waters. In 2009 a number of new datasets were included in an updated version of the grid. The 2009 bathymetric grid of Australia has been produced to include recently acquired datasets, and solutions to issues identified in the previous version. The revised grid has the same extents as its 2005 counterpart, including the Australian water column jurisdiction lying between 92 deg E and 172 deg E, and 8 deg S and 60 deg S. The waters adjacent to the continent of Australia and Tasmania are included, as are areas surrounding Macquarie Island, and the Australian Territories of Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The area selected does not include Australia's marine jurisdiction offshore from the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands and the Australian Antarctic Territory. This report details the datasets and procedures used to produce the 2009 bathymetric grid of Australia. As per the 2005 grid, the 0.0025 decimal degree (dd) resolution is only supported where direct bathymetric observations are sufficiently dense (e.g. where swath bathymetry data or digitised chart data exist) (Webster and Petkovic, 2005). In areas where no sounding data are available (in waters off the Australian shelf), the grid is based on the 2 arc minute ETOPO (Smith and Sandwell, 1997) and 1 arc minute ETOPO (Amante and Eakins, 2008) satellite derived bathymetry. The topographic data (on shore data) is based on the revised Australian 0.0025dd topography grid (Geoscience Australia, 2008), the 0.0025dd NZ topography grid (Geographx, 2008) and the 90m SRTM DEM (Jarvis et al, 2008). The final dataset has been provided in ESRI grid and ER Mapper (ers) formats. An associated shapefile has been produced so that the user can identify the input datasets that were used in the final grid. This dataset comprises derived bathymetric isobaths (depth contour lines) generated from the Geoscience Australia (GA) AusBathyTopo 250m 2024 gridded bathymetric dataset (https://dx.doi.org/10.26186/150050). The AusBathyTopo 250m grid provides a high-resolution terrain model for Australia, covering ocean and land areas from 92°E to 172°E and 8°S to 60°S at a resolution of 250 metres. The bathymetric contours are clipped to the boundaries of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ: https://amsis-geoscience-au.hub.arcgis.com/datasets/geoscience-au::exclusive-economic-zone-limits/about), and includes all regions including and below Mean Sea Level (MSL). Four contour datasets are provided: 1) 100 m intervals: full EEZ coverage. 2) 5 m intervals: shallow regions between 0–200 m depth (nominally the Australian continental shelf and shallow oceanic features). 3) 1 m intervals: shallow regions between 0–200 m depth. 4) Composite product: Multi-resolution contours with full EEZ coverage, including: • 2 m intervals for depths 0–30 m. • 5 m intervals for depths 30–100 m. • 10 m intervals for depths 100–200 m. • 50 m intervals for depths 200–2,000 m. • 100 m intervals for depths 2,000–8,000 m. These contour datasets are intended for use in marine spatial planning, mapping visualisation, and broad-scale analysis. Due to the smoothing procedures applied during their creation the are not suitable for engineering or high-precision applications. The contours presented through the Web Mapping Services (WMS) linked to this record are optimised for visualisation purposes and have been simplified using a tolerance of 10 meters for efficient rendering in mapping applications. For users requiring full-resolution data, the download packages include the original, unsimplified contour products.
North Western Tasmania Bathymetry - V 1:25000

The north western Tasmania Bathymetry 1:25000 depicts bathymetric contours from Robbins Island [144deg 53min, -40deg 44min] to West Head [146deg 43min, -41deg 44min] from the coastline to 1500m from the coastline. The contour intervals are at 2 metre intervals. The dataset is intended to be used to fulfil coastal management objectives according to The Living Marine Resources Act 1995 and to support Natural Resource management priorities in the Northern NRM region of Tasmania. It is not to be used for navigational purposes.

Geoscience Australia and the National Oceans Office carried out a joint venture project to produce a consistent, high-quality 9 arc second (0.0025 degree or ~250 m at the equator) bathymetric data grid of those parts of the Australian water column jurisdiction lying between 92E and 172E and 8S and 60S. As well as the waters adjacent to the continent of Australia and Tasmania, the area selected also covers the area of water column jurisdiction surrounding Macquarie Island, and the Australian Territories of Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The area selected does not include Australias marine jurisdiction off of the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands and the Australian Antarctic Territory. The underlying data from which this grid is derived can only support this resolution in areas where direct bathymetric observations are sufficiently dense (e.g. where swath bathymetry data or digitised chart data exist). In areas where only track-line data exist, the grid resolution is high along-line but low perpendicular to lines. In areas where no sounding data are available, the grid is based on interpolated or indirectly observed bathymetry, and these data can only support a resolution of 2 arc minutes (2 nautical miles or ~3.7 km). The grid covers an area of approximately 41 million square kilometres. Its dimensions are 32003 x 20803 cells resulting in a file size slightly in excess of 1.3 Gb of 2-bytes integer numbers representing the bathymetric values. The grid synthesises approximately 1.7 billion observed data points. This grid is not suitable for use as an aid to navigation, or to replace any products produced by the Australian Hydrographic Service. This dataset is a contribution to the CERF Marine Biodiversity Hub and is hosted temporarily by CMAR on behalf of Geoscience Australia.
