Marine Sediments database (MARS) (GA)
The MARine Sediment (MARS) database contains detailed information on seabed sediment characteristics for samples collected from Australia's marine jurisdiction, including the Australian Antarctic Territory. It also includes the Geat Barrier Reef (GBR). It is an important scientific resource that includes survey and sample information such as locations, water depths and sample descriptions. Data are also provided from quantitative analyses of the sediments, such as grain size, mud, sand, gravel and carbonate concentrations, mineralogy, age determinations, geochemical properties, and physical attributes for down-core samples including bulk density, p-wave velocity, porosity and magnetic susceptibility. Images and graphics are presented, where available. MARS currently holds >40,000 sample and sub-sample records, and approximately 200,000 records describing the characteristics of these samples. New data are being added as they become available. It includes: Core, Dredge, Grab, Water, Column and Camera samples. Format: Data can be downloaded in CSV format for: - All sample data, - CaCO3 as mud/sand/gravel/bulk, - CaCO3 +grain size as mud/sand/gravel/[bulk|mean], - Grain size as mud/sand/gravel/mean, - Grain size for laser, - Grain size all, - Minerals with method of ICP-MS/XRF - Salinity. The full database is a 500 MB CSV. For the eAtlas the "CaCO3 +grain size as mud/sand/gravel/[bulk|mean]" CSV file was downloaded and converted to a shapefile for visualisation. This is available for download from this record. This metadata is not an authoritative source and was developed for the eAtlas. Seabed sediment data were extracted from Geoscience Australia's MARine Sediment database (MARS - http://www.ga.gov.au/oracle/mars/). They include the percentage of carbonate in the sediment, and the percentage of mud, sand, or gravel size material found in seabed sediment samples, throughout the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. The data grids were created using ArcGIS Inverse Distance Squared Weighted methodology.

Geoscience Australia maintains a national collection of marine geological samples and analytical data from across the Australian region. Digital records of these datasets are held within the Marine Sediment Database (MARS), available as an online resource of c. 2.6 million entries. Here we have extracted data from MARS to collate sediment properties for over 15,000 seabed samples for use as a standalone dataset. Analytical data includes textural composition (mud, sand, gravel), summary statistics for particle size distributions, textural class and calcium carbonate values (where available). Information on sample water depth, location and marine survey is also provided. The sample set spans the coast, continental shelf, slope and deep ocean locations across the Australian marine region (covering the extent of the AusBathyTopo 250m 2023 grid). This dataset has utility for a broad range of purposes including seabed characterisation, sediment transport modelling, habitat characterisation, seabed engineering studies and fundamental geological and sedimentological research. Additional metadata of this dataset are provided in the word document accompanied with the dataset. The metadata document describes the attribute table, the sediment carbonate classification and the sediment facies.

Australian Marine Physical Environmental Data - Descriptions and Metadata

This report provides detailed metadata for the 37 marine physical environmental variables that were collated or specifically generated by the Marine Biodiversity Hub, which is part of the Commonwealth Environment Research Facilities Program. The work was done at Geoscience Australia and the Marine and Atmospheric Division of CSIRO. The data are required for use in the Hub's surrogacy and predictive modelling research. Bathymetry, geomorphology, seabed sediment and seabed exposure data were produced by Geoscience Australia. Bottom-water and surface-water parameters were produced by CSIRO. For each variable there is a general description, comprehensive metadata and a distribution map. All data were transformed to a common datum, WGS84, and converted to a grid with a cell size of 0.01 degrees. The metadata reports conform to ANZLIC standards. The data fall into five categories: 1. Bathymetry and geomorphology, derived from the 250 m resolution National Bathymetry Grid at Geoscience Australia; 2. Seabed sediments, derived from the MARS database at Geoscience Australia; 3. Seabed exposure, produced from the output of a seabed shear stress model, GEOMACS, at Geoscience Australia; 4. Bottom-water nutrients and temperature, extracted from the CARS database at CSIRO; 5. Surface-water parameters, derived from satellite images at CSIRO.

This dataset contains point data describing physical properties of marine sediments as held within the Geoscience Australia Marine Sediment database (MARS) for samples acquired by marine surveys that occurred between 1905 and 2017. Samples were collected from within the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone, plus waters within Australian Antarctic Territory, waters around Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) and outside the EEZ within the Timor Sea and waters around Papua New Guinea. Samples are sourced from a range of organisations, with sampling technique, spatial accuracy and sample preservation varying between surveys. Attributes include survey ID and name, sample ID, sampling method, water depth and location information. Sediment properties include %mud, %sand, %gravel, mean grain size and texture (classified using the Folk (1954) nomenclature for sediments). There is no consistent datum and projection due to the time span, differing collecting organisations and method of measurement across the dataset. All data is referenced to WGS 84 unless stated otherwise.
