Stigma and discrimination in NSW
To support conversations and actions that reduce stigma and discrimination against people with mental illness, the Commission contracted the University of Melbourne to provide a report on the NSW findings from the National Surveys of Mental Health Literacy and Stigma and National Survey of Discrimination and Positive Treatment. To highlight and synthesise findings, issues and implications, the Commission has produced the summary report as a companion document.

The Mental Health Commission of NSW is an independent body which helps drive reform that benefits people who experience mental illness and their families and carers. The Commission is working with the mental health community towards sustained change regarding all aspects of mental illness and its impact on employment, education, housing, justice and general health. The Commission has been tasked with developing a draft strategic plan for Government by March 2014. To inform the development of the draft strategic plan, a rapid review was commissioned to examine the costs and impacts on the economy and productivity due to mental illness (broken down by mental health disorder).

In May 2013 the Mental Health Commission of NSW engaged Dr Tim Smyth to undertake a functional review of the NSW Institute of Psychiatry (IOP). This review forms part of the ongoing work of the Commission under its Charter to, “review the work of academic and other institutions receiving mental health funding and prepare advice to the Minister on how activity might be better coordinated to meet the needs of current and future mental health care in NSW”.
The NSW NDIS and Mental Health Analysis Partnership Project

The NSW Mental Health Commission has partnered with the Mental Health Coordinating Council (MHCC) - the NSW peak group for community-managed organisations providing mental health support - to place a project officer to work at the Hunter NDIS site since July 2013. The NSW NDIS and Mental Health Analysis Partnership Project was intended to provide early insights into operational aspects of the NDIS in relation to people with psychosocial disability, which is a frequent consequence of severe and persistent mental illness.
