Ward boundaries within the City of Sydney local government area (LGA) have shifted many times, dramatically affecting the number and character of people entitled to vote. The redrawing of ward boundaries was largely undertaken to redress imbalances as the demographic makeup of the City changed over time. The polygon layer represents the boundaries of each ward and table lists the corresponding assessment books. This data is part of the historic ward boundaries story map.

Ward precincts, which function as local election districts to determine the polling places for voters, based on their addresses. Precincts are based on U.S. Census Bureau blocks. These precincts were first used for the November 2022 election and first used for Chicago municipal elections in 2023. Neither this description nor the dataset should be relied upon in situations where legal precision is required. Spatial extend of the wards within local government areas. Wards are used in some local government areas for election of councillors. Not all LGA's have wards. The local governing body periodically reviews the ward boundaries through a process of electoral redistribution.

Not all local governments are divided into wards. Local government councillors are elected to represent either the whole local government or a particular ward. Derived from the Spatial Cadastral Database (SCDB) and based on GDA 94. Updated regularly when amendments/changes are formalised. Election results are published at the Ward and Ward-Division levels. However, wards and ward divisions are adjusted on an ongoing bsais, and in order to map historic election results, it is necessary to have ward divisions that match the boundaries in effect at the time of the election. Historic ward and ward division boundary data are from PASDA, Azavea, and Robert Cheetham archives. In addition, some results from open records requests to teh City of Philadelphia. Data has been collected for 2003 to 2020. Attribute tables were modified to match across all years.
