The information exists as an alphanumeric code string, reflecting the floristic composition of the canopy. Overlays were scanned and converted into a rectified, attributed, topographically correct digital dataset. Photo information was compiled into 1:100 000 tiles for the project area but was later combined into a merged Upper North East NSW dataset.; ; Areas where vegetation mapping already existed at an adequate scale and classification, were included within this broad dataset. Two spatial products generated for the Comprehensive Regional Assessment (CRA), namely floristic linework captured by aerial photographic interpretation (API), and a; forest ecosystem model, were integrated to provide an improved spatial map of forest ecosystem distribution on the Mid North Coast of NSW. The process involved intuitive assignment of dominant forest ecosystems to polygons captured by the API, and involved a number of iterative steps. The resultant layer is both polygon and grid cell based, and provides an interim spatial product upon which Government agencies will be able to identify high conservation value native vegetation across the Mid North Coast of NSW with reasonable reliability.; The original forest ecosystem classification included some 230 ecosystems, occurring from the Queensland Border to the Lower Hunter Valley. Of these, 124 were eliminated, either because they were not considered to occur in the Mid North; Coast, or they were replaced by new or existing ecosystems. A total of 40 ecosystems were introduced, including splits of existing ecosystems (eg. rainforest) or new ecosystems imported from more recent classifications. The final number of ecosystems mapped within the Mid North Coast for this project was 140. Derivation of current and former extent of each ecosystem was undertaken to provide an index of conservation status in the form of a %-cleared estimate. In; summary, 39 ecosystems possessed a %-cleared value of at least 50%, while 46 ecosystems were less than 20% cleared. Several of those with a high clearing rate are equivalent to endangered ecological communities listed under the Threatened Species Act 1995. In the longer term, an improved classification will be required to replace forest ecosystems, which is overly broad on coastal and private land given the influence of commercial forest types on the classification. Additional targeted API will also be; required in future, as the reliability of API undertaken for the CRA is questionable in many areas. Provision of an improved API coverage and a more appropriate classification will enable production of a new generation of vegetation mapping products for north-east NSW, providing the future basis for property vegetation planning, benchmarking, bio-certification and bio-banking.; VIS_ID 3886
Imagery data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

This reference contains the imagery data used in the completion of the baseline vegetation inventory project for the NPS park unit. Orthophotos, raw imagery, and scanned aerial photos are common files held here.\ Natural color aerial photographs were acquired from three different photo missions between 1995 and 1997. A total of 13 photos along three flight lines were used. The photo missions cover the entire project area, which includes the entire park and environs. Skytech Aero, Inc. (North Little Rock, AR) took aerial photographs for the western portion of the project on August 27, 1995. The photos were taken at a flight height of approximately 13,000 feet with a Jena MRB 15/2323 camera using color negative film. The scale of the 9 x 9-inch paper prints was approximately 1:26,500. Skytech Aero, Inc. (North Little Rock, AR) took aerial photographs for the central portion of the project on September 5, 1996. The photos were taken at a flight height of approximately 12,000 feet with a Jena MRB 15/2323 camera using color negative film. The scale of the 9 x 9-inch paper prints was approximately 1:23,700. Skytech Aero, Inc. (North Little Rock, AR) took aerial photographs for the eastern portion of the project on September 28, 1997. The photos were taken at a flight height of approximately 11,000 feet with a Jena MRB 15/2323 camera using color negative film. The scale of the 9 x 9-inch paper prints was approximately 1:22,000. Two sets of ancillary aerial photography were used as collateral information. The first was a set of CIR paper prints. Intrasearch (12424 E Weaver Place, Ste 100, Englewood, CO 80111) took aerial photographs on August 9, 1983. The photos were taken at a flight height of 12,000 feet above mean ground level with a RC8 camera using Kodak 2443 Infrared film. The scale of the 9 x 9-inch paper prints was approximately 1:24,000. The second ancillary photography was a set of black-and-white paper prints. Rocky Mountain Aerial Surveys, Inc (14 Inverness Drive East, Building G-136, Englewood, CO 80111-6406) took aerial photographs on October 18,1997. The photos were taken at a flight height of 6000 feet above mean ground level with a Zeiss RMKA/15/23 camera using Kodak 2405 XX Black and White film. The scale of the 9 x 9-inch paper prints was approximately 1:12,000. Other source information supplied by the NPS includes (all digital): the park boundary, surficial geology, soils, and noxious weeds. The USGS supplied Digital Raster Graphic data (DRG), Digital Elevation Model data (DEM), and Digital Orthophoto data (DOQ). Slope and aspect data was derived from the DEM.
Forest Ecosystem Grid for CRA Lower North East. VIS ID 3883

Map of the distribution of each forest ecosystem across extant forest in the Lower North East CRA region. Three separate classifications and mapping techniques were used to derive the ecosystems in three distinct biogeographic regions and these classifications and maps were then expertly integrated and merged to create a full coverage across the region. The ecosystems were mapped for application in the Comprehensive Regional Assessment process. ; ; The 100m modelled grid data is to be used in a regional context and not for fine scale interpretation. For areas without detailed vegetation mapping (western portions of the UNE and LNE regions, and the southern portion of the LNE region) the modelled distributions were used to predict the proportion of a modelled ecosystem only. Existing vegetation surveys and mapping were reviewed and supplemented with 16 additional full floristic vegetation plots and over 230 rapid data points (RDPs). Plant Community Type (PCT) mapping was undertaken at a scale of 1:10,000 using a range of datasets. A total of 14 unique PCTs totalling 8,007 ha of native vegetation were mapped including four Endangered Ecological Communities (EECs) listed under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (TSC Act) with three of these communities also being listed under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). A finer level of mapping detail was provided through the delineation of structural variants of PCTs across their mapped occurrences to facilitate park management activities. A total of 15 midstorey variants were identified resulting in a total of 50 unique units which demonstrates significant variation across PCTs in Breelong and Drillwarrina National Parks. VIS_ID 4529
