IMEF (the Integrated Monitoring of Environmental Flows) Program was developed in 1998 to monitor the first environmental flow releases across the NSW regulated rivers. It was designed to both monitor the first flow events and to develop environmental flow methods suitable for monitoring aquatic systems across NSW. Data was collected until 2012 in a range of aquatic systems affected by flow from regulated rivers. The rivers included the Namoi, Macquarie, Lachlan, Murrumbidgee and their tributaries. The Integrated Monitoring of Environmental Flows (IMEF) program consists of ecological monitoring projects across the regulated rivers of NSW. IMEF was set up to monitor environmental flow effects and included projects such as the effect of inundating floodplain wetlands (Hypothesis 7) on water quality, aquatic vegetation, invertebrates and frogs. Other project included monitoring the effect of translucent releases from major dams on river water quality, biofilm development and stony be invertebrates. Instream productivity in lowland rivers downstream of dams were also monitored. In some catchments, waterbirds, blackwater events, and other ecological indicators were used.
