Locations of tree density and monitoring plots during koa moth outbreak, Hawaii Island, 2013-2014

Observers assessed the density and monitored the defoliation, refoliation, and survival of koa (Acacia koa) trees during the 2013-2014 outbreak of the koa moth (Scotorythra paludicola) at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. Koa trees were tagged, classified by size class, and assessed on 55 plots (10-m radius) randomly located in two forest types (reforestation and natural forest) near Pedro and Pua Akala roads. Density and size class distribution was also assessed for ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees on each plot. This dataset provides the location data for all plots.

This project will implement monitoring programs for the endangered southern cassowary, Casuarisus casuarius, and the vulnerable spectacled flying-fox, Pteropus conspicillatus. Cassowary monitoring will be based on regular surveys to collect dung. DNA fingerprinting of the bird dung will provide data on cassowary abundance and distribution, the influence of habitat type and the structure and phylogeography of cassowary populations across the region. For spectacled flying-fox monthly surveys of all known spectacled flying-fox camps in the Wet Tropics Region will be conducted. Resulting data will be used to describe population distribution, population size and trends to build upon the long term database already established.

The geodatabase represents the sampling design used to meet the project's purpose. The sampling design relies upon systematic sampling for smaller parks (LEWI and SAJH) and spatially balanced, GRTS sampling for larger parks (MORA, NOCA, OLYM). The objectives of the landbird monitoring program are to 1) detect trends in the density of as many landbird species (including passerines, near-passerines, and galliformes) as possible throughout accessible areas of five NCCN parks during the breeding season and 2) track changes in the breeding season distribution of landbird species throughout accessible areas of the large wilderness parks. The geodatabase represents the sampling design used to meet the project's objectives. The sampling design relies upon systematic sampling for smaller parks (Lewis and Clark National Historical Park [LEWI] and San Juan Island National Historical park [SAJH]) and spatially balanced, Generalized Random Tesselation Stratified (GRTS) sampling for larger parks (Mount Rainier National Park [MORA], North Cascades National Park [NOCA], Olympic National Park [OLYM]). The GRTS sample design was created using stratified equal probability survey design. Potential transect starting locations were defined based on road and trail networks. The sample design formed the basis for office and field evaluation of selected locations and the subsequent establishment of long-term monitoring transects.

Data derived from the Natural Values Atlas consisting primarily of point locations (Eastings and Northings) and associated attributes for flora and fauna in Tasmania. The data set contains information on more than 20,000 Tasmanian species. The web-based interface allows observations of Tasmanian plants and animals to be viewed, recorded and analysed. Users can search for observations of species by name, location, date, person, project, source, site, populations or groups such as plants, animals or threatened species. Habitat mapping is also available for a limited number of high priority fauna species. The NVA maintains species taxonomy and provides access to management documents such as listing statements and recovery plans. Additional attribute information is also stored within the NVA, including species values for conservation significance as well as project specific data. Natural Values Reports are available and include several natural resource management data sets such as threatened species, Geoconservation and TASVEG. The NVA also stores environmental management locations that include areas where activities to control, monitor, manage or maintain natural values have been undertaken. Examples include 1080 baits, traps, nest boxes and monitoring plots.
