Reconnaissance Soil and Land Resources of the Murray Catchment
This digital soil landscape product contains natural resource mapping for the Murray Catchment Management Authority area. It integrates numerous soil mapping datasets into a single seamless coverage and provides access to numerous layers of spatial information and reports on soil types, terrain and physical constraints to use for the one hundred and fifty one map units. This information will assist in informed natural resource decision making, planning and environmental modelling throughout the catchment such as help target investments in land management and future soil and land incentive projects for the catchment. Each soil landscape mapping unit is an inventory of soil and landscape information with relatively uniform land management requirements, allowing major soil and landscape constraints to be identified. Constraints assessed in this dataset include shallow soils, steep slopes, mass movement hazard, non-cohesive soils, discharge zones, recharge zones, salinity, wind, sheet and gully erosion hazards, seasonal waterlogging and flood hazard. Soils are described using the Australian Soil Classification and the Great Soil Groups systems. Related Datasets: The dataset area is also covered by the mapping of the Hydrogeological landscapes of NSW and Land Systems of Western New South Wales. This digital soil landscape product contains natural resource mapping for the Hunter and Central Rivers sub-catchments plus extends to also include the Hunter Local Land Services (LLS) government boundary. The dataset upgrades 1:250,000 soil landscape mapping for the Singleton area providing a standardised and seamless land and soil information across the region at 1:100,000 scale. Mapping covers an area of 37,639 km2 from Yarrowitch and Murrurundi in the north to around Rylstone and Woy Woy in the south and extends west to just past Ulan. The project was partially funded by the Hunter LLS and will assist decision making, planning and environmental modelling throughout the region. It also supports improved decision making and management of highly productive agricultural area (e.g. Biophysical Strategic Agricultural Land) under the NSW Government's Strategic Regional Land Use Policy (SRLUP) and Mining Sepp. Four hundred and sixty soil landscape map units have been described within the Hunter Region. Each unit is an inventory of soil and landscape information with relatively uniform land management requirements, allowing major soil and landscape qualities and constraints to be identified. Many representative type profiles are supported by laboratory analysis and soils are described using the Australian Soil Classification and the Great Soil Groups systems. Related Datasets: The dataset area is also covered by the mapping of the Soil landscape 1:100 000 and 1:250 000 mapping series for the map sheets of Murrurundi, Blackville, Dungog, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Gosford/Lake Macquarie, Sydney, Wallerawang, St Albans, Dubbo and Singleton. This digital soil landscape product contains natural resource mapping for the Merriwa. The Merriwa Plateau is located in the upper Hunter catchment including hills of the Southern Liverpool Ranges; grading to gently sloped plateau around Merriwa. The project was funded by the National Partnership Agreement to provide improved soil and landscape information for this highly productive agricultural area. It has enabled more accurate and better quality Land and Soil Capability and Soil Fertility information to be available for future updates of Biophysical Strategic Agricultural Land (BSAL) mapping under the NSW Strategic Regional Land Use Policy (SRLUP). This resource information will also assist other decision making, planning and environmental modelling throughout the catchment. The project was funded by the ACT Government to enhance knowledge of soils, landscapes and physical constraints to land use in the urban and rural environment. The information will assist in informed decision making, planning and environmental modelling throughout the catchment. Fifty-five soil landscape map units have been described for the ACT. Each unit is an inventory of soil and landscape information with relatively uniform land management requirements, allowing major soil and landscape qualities and constraints to be identified. Soils are described using the Australian Soil Classification and the Great Soil Groups systems. ## Purpose The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA) is responsible for Ontario’s provincial soil maps and maintains and update them as necessary. Digital Soil Mapping (DSM) is a modern methodology using spatially explicit soils and environmental data to predict soil variation throughout a landscape at a high, consistent resolution. Digital soil maps are being rolled out throughout Ontario’s agricultural land base to update provincial soil maps. ## Reach Provincial soil maps are used in many decision-making processes including: * land use planning * land evaluation * farming practices * best management practices * ecological monitoring * land resource mapping Potential users of this data include: * farmers * certified crop advisors * conservation authorities * academic researchers * land use planners ## Potential impacts Digital soil maps provide more accurate and precise soils data and enables improved management of soil resources across multiple stakeholders. This allows for better decision making to maximize land use efficiency, improve economic efficiency of soil resources and promote soil health and soil conservation. ## Technical description Digital soil mapping combines geo-referenced soil observations with geo-referenced environmental layers to mathematically model soil variation as a function of environment variation. These models are based on well established, but often complex relationships, between soil properties and topography, biology, geology and hydrology.

This map is one of a series of soil landscape maps that are intended for all of eastern and central NSW, based on standard 1:100,000 or 1:250,000 topographic sheets. The map provides an inventory of soil and landscape properties of the Murrurundi 1:100,000 map sheet area and identifies major soil and landscape qualities and constraints. It integrates soil and topographic features into single units with relatively uniform land management requirements. Soils are described in terms of soil materials in addition to Australian Soil Classification and Great Soil Group systems. Get consolidated soil data mapped on a county basis in a digitally stitched and standardized product. This soil survey data was mapped by a number of soil surveyors from the 1920s to the 1990s. The product incorporates soil information from a variety of map scales. The project has brought the individual county or regional municipality surveys together to reveal inconsistencies in soil data across county boundaries.
