The data is available in ESRI shapefile (.shp) format.

A polygon dataset maintained by NSW Office of Environment and Heritage on behalf of the Heritage Council of NSW for items listed on the State Heritage Register under the Heritage Act, 1977. The data applies to a listing on the State Heritage Register and applies to a place, building, work, relic, moveable object, precinct, or land. When a listing on the State Heritage Register applies to a place, building, work, relic, moveable object, precinct, or land, a person must not do any of the following things without appropriate approvals:(a) demolish the building or work,(b) damage or despoil the place, precinct or land, or any part of the place, precinct or land,(c) move, damage or destroy the relic or moveable object,(d) excavate any land for the purpose of exposing or moving the relic,(e) carry out any development in relation to the land on which the building, work or relic is situated, the land that comprises the place, or land within the precinct,(f) alter the building, work, relic or moveable object,(g) display any notice or advertisement on the place, building, work, relic, moveable object or land, or in the precinct,(h) damage or destroy any tree or other vegetation on or remove any tree or other vegetation from the place, precinct or land. These data provide locational and attribute information for places on the Register of the National Estate (RNE) as determined by the Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, Heritage Divison.RNE polygons with attribute information describing the place name, class (indigenous, natural, historic), 'Place_ID' (a unique identifier used to link to the textual, spatial and photographic databases) and status.Places on the 'Interim Register of the National Estate' are included in these data. These are attributed as "Interim" in the status field. The "Identified" status indicates that a place has been accepted onto the register, but the assessment was performed by state government bodies.Places subject to confidentiality agreements (or otherwise subject to s24c of the Australian Heritage Commission Act 1975) are not included in these data.Spatial data for places (mostly historic) in cities, is currently being derived using urban cadastral data. These sites are being incorporated into each new release, as they become available.The Register of the National Estate was closed in 2007 and is no longer a statutory list. All references to the Register of the National Estate were removed from the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) on 19 February 2012 The Register of the National Estate (RNE) is now an archive of information about more than 13,000 places throughout Australia.

These data provide locational and attribute information for places for places nominated to and included in the National Heritage List as determined by the Australian Government managed by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. National Heritage List polygons with attribute information describing the place name, class (indigenous, natural, historic), and status. Places subject to confidentiality agreements are included in these data but the location is generalised to the bounding 100k mapsheet. The location data for place nominations that have been rejected, are ineligible, removed or destroyed are not included in the publicly downloadable spatial dataset.
