Vegetation association mapping undertaken as part of a resource and fire behaviour assessment for Pilliga Nature Reserve and Warrumbungle National Park in 1990. Existing datasets were collated and field survey undertaken to inform air photo interpretation of vegetation patterns. 36 field survey sites were sampled in the Pilliga. Number of sites sampled in the Warrumbungles is not recorded. Specifications of aerial photography is not provided, however 1:50,000 air photos were flown over the Pilliga and part of Warrumbungles in 1989, and 1:50,000 photos captured in 1982 exist for the remainder of Warrumbungle NP. The purpose of the project was to provide an overall picture of the vegetation types and to sample fuel loadings stratified by vegetation type/physiology/aspect for incorporation into the NPWS FIREMAPS (Fire Mapping and Prediction System) and ERMS databases. Current format is ArcGIS file geodatabase but older formats may exist as shapefiles. A map showing the locations of vegetation associations in the park was created, following the NVIP protocols. Digital geospatial databases were created for the ROVA project in its entirety. In early spring 2006, following the vegetation classification plot data analysis, the 2003 preliminary vegetation map of the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt NHS (excluding Roosevelt Farm and Forest), Val-Kill, and Vanderbilt Mansion NHS was edited and refined to produce a revised vegetation map prior to thematic accuracy assessment (AA). In addition, in early spring of 2008, the 2007 Roosevelt Farm and Forest preliminary vegetation map was edited and refined to produce a revised vegetation map prior to AA. Using ArcMap 9.2 (ESRI 1999-2006), both preliminary maps were revised by editing polygon boundaries on-screen based on the classification plot data, field observations, classification analyses, aerial photography signatures, and topographic maps.

Existing vegetation surveys and mapping were reviewed and supplemented with 16 additional full floristic vegetation plots and over 230 rapid data points (RDPs). Plant Community Type (PCT) mapping was undertaken at a scale of 1:10,000 using a range of datasets. A total of 14 unique PCTs totalling 8,007 ha of native vegetation were mapped including four Endangered Ecological Communities (EECs) listed under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 (TSC Act) with three of these communities also being listed under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). A finer level of mapping detail was provided through the delineation of structural variants of PCTs across their mapped occurrences to facilitate park management activities. A total of 15 midstorey variants were identified resulting in a total of 50 unique units which demonstrates significant variation across PCTs in Breelong and Drillwarrina National Parks. VIS_ID 4529
