These datasets represent management units within in-force water sharing plans across NSW, including regulated, unregulated and groundwater plans (or a combination of these). The data includes both water sources and management zones (where applicable) derived from plans gazetted under the NSW Water Management Act 2000. The boundaries of these water sources and management zones are used to define areas in which specific management rules apply. As such, this data may be used to understand which water sharing plan rules apply to a specific location. The plans are in place for 10 years but may be amended within this time. Any updates to water source or management zone boundaries as a result of a plan being amended during, or replaced following its 10 year term will be made available at that time. ABOUT WETLANDS: Wetlands are a crucial part of the natural environment. Wetlands provide breeding and feeding habitat for waterbirds, fish, invertebrates and plants. Wetlands may be natural or human made. The water in a wetland can be still or flowing, and can be fresh, brackish or saline. SIGNIFICANT WETLANDS for Unregulated River Water Sharing Plans (Inland NSW): These are wetlands have been identified by the department as being suitable for listing under water sharing plans to protect their water from extraction. The wetlands are those that are recognised under the International Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar), are listed under the Directory of Important Wetlands of Australia (DIWA) or have been identified as wetlands that hold water for long periods during dry times, and have ecological values listed under the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. This data generates an interactive map of wetlands (including lakes and billabongs), considered significant for the purposes of new access and trade rules in inland unregulated water sharing plans. In NSW, all surface and groundwater is managed under water sharing plans (WSPs). WSPs cover large catchments and are subordinate to the Water Management Act 2000. A WSP has rules which protect significant wetlands. The wetlands were identified through a method developed by the NSW government in 2023. The method does not identify all significant wetlands in a catchment. The types of wetlands in this data set are those which have a water body that is persistent for at least a few months following inundation. It does not include other significant wetlands which may be inundated for shorter periods of time but which still have significance due to the vegetation and fauna that rely on that shorter period of inundation. This data asset can be used by landholders, conservationists and others to understand the location of significant wetlands, for the purposes of new WSP rules. The spatial data asset complements relevant pdf maps of significant wetlands for remade individual inland river unregulated WSPs (available on DCCEEW Department website). The wetlands include those that are recognised under the International Convention on Wetlands (Ramsar), areas that form part of a listing on the Directory of Important Wetlands of Australia (DIWA) or have been identified as receiving protections under a prior water sharing plan. Wetlands identified within Floodplain Management Plan Management Zones D or SP may be added following further consultation with affected stakeholders. This data generates an interactive map of wetlands (including lakes and billabongs), considered significant for the purposes of new water supply works and trade rules in inland unregulated water sharing plans. Water sharing plans (WSP) are established under the Water Management Act 2000 (the Act) and are prepared for all water sources in NSW. These plans are also a component of Water Resources Plans prepared as a requirement of the Basin Plan 2012, covering water sources in the Murray–Darling Basin. WSP’s are reviewed and replaced periodically (usually every ten years) to ensure the long-term health of ecosystems and communities in specific WSP areas. The review of a WSP includes a formal evaluation to assess appropriateness, efficiency of implementation, effectiveness in meeting plan objectives, and alignment with the Act's requirements. The evaluation follows a step-by-step process which includes a model scenario to represent the effects of Planned Environmental Water (PEW) rules in the WSP. This high-level (“No PEW”) scenario enables a comparison of modelled flows at key locations within the river system between scenarios WITH and WITHOUT plan environmental rules to inform an assessment of the effectiveness of the PEW rules in the WSP.
