Pelagic Ecosystems Stomach Contents Investigation (PESCI) Database
This dataset stores information on the diet of pelagic fishes (tuna and swordfish). The samples and data have been collected seasonally from various sources (fishers on commercial, recreational and chartered vessels as well as CSIRO staff and observers) since 1992. Swordfish Stomach Content Data, 1989-2000

Stomach contents were tabulated for 734 swordfish (Xiphias gladius) from the central North Pacific from 1989 to 2000 (most from 1994-1998). The swordfish were captured by various commercial fishermen (with stomachs collected by the Pacific Islands Region Observer Program) or during PIFSC research cruises. Prey items from the stomachs were identified to the lowest taxonomic rank possible, enumerated, weighed, and measured, primarily by Bruce Mundy, Michael Seki, Happy Williams, Alan Everson, with assistance from Fisheries Observers from the Pacific Islands Regional Office. Associated data on fish length, weight, collection year, month, and location were obtained from observer, fishermen, or cruise data records, or from whole fish brought to the laboratory.

Data from fish captured by Erwin, Casey 1988. Includes fish size, weight, sex, reproductive stage data as well as quantitative stomach contents data and qualitative position data. Approximate locations where fish were caught are provided in the database. Additionally an approximate image map is also provided as a visual reference. These data are stored in an Access Database. This data was collected to primarily provide preliminary information on the diets of ten pelagic fish species common to the Northern Prawn Fishery, specifically to investigate any effects of prawn predation by pelagic fish. After the project was initiated the scope of the study was broadened to investigate the age, growth (by otoliths) and reproductive dynamics (by GSI and histology) of these species. Tissue samples from at about 100 specimens representing each species were also taken and stored in DMSO solution and is available for any researcher wishing to undertake a genetic stock structure study. This study was solely funded by CMR as a pilot study. As a result of limited funds, fish specimens were collected opportunistically from recreational fisher donations, commercial catches and from bycatch samples from scientific cruises. As a result, the capture location of the majority of specimens does not have a lat/long, and is generally only identified by the general area of capture (i.e. 'Weipa' or 'Gladstone'). The method of capture was recorded to the best of our knowledge (i.e. hook and line, gillnet etc), although actual gear specifications and shot information were generally not available.
