Southern Surveyor Voyage SS 08/97 Biological Data Overview
This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 08/97. This cruise took place in the Torres Straits, Gulf of Carpentaria and Arafura Sea during 3 October - 3 November 1997, under the leadership of John Salini. Biological data collected on this cruise include vertebrate and invertebrate bycatch species from 9 prawn trawl areas, Roxann and EK500 acoustic data to help discriminate bottom environments, accompanied by dredge tows and abiotic SDL (submersible data logger) data. 21 sea snakes were also tested for post-trawl survival, and two live leiognathids (ponyfish) were chemically treated for otolith marking. This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 01/93. This cruise took place in waters off northern Queensland and the Gulf of Carpentaria during 11 January - 12 February 1993, under the leadership of John Salini. Biological data collected on this cruise include fish species composition and abundance data from 27 demersal trawls and benthic samples from dredging. RoxAnne acoustic data and hydrology samples. Seabird data from Magra and Saunders Islands. Data from the environmentally friendly net (EFN) and Engels net trawling trials including some video photography and benthic samples from dredging. Tissue samples from 143 Lutjanus malabaricus and 24 L. sebae and 63 other lutjanids (3 species) for population genetics studies. Numerous specimens were retained for the I. S. R. Munro Fish collection in Hobart and photographic images of the very large specimens. Cephalopods samples which consisted mainly of the loliginid squids. This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 07/93. This cruise took place in the Gulf of Carpentaria and Northern Queensland waters during 17 October - 29 November, under the leadership of John Salini. Biological data collected on this cruise include samples from bycatch reduction device (BRD) prawn trawls and from environmentally friendly net (EFN) trawls. Clear video images of bottom structure and fish behaviour in the EFN codend were obtained. Dredge samples of bottom flora and fauna from the EFN sites and benthos from the footrope and in the trawl nets were also recorded as an indicator of bottom structure. Tissue samples from L. malabaricus and L. sebae were obtained and fish samples for the I. S. R. Munro Fish Collection in Hobart. Queensland museum staff collected 75 species of sponge from 21 fish trawls and some from dredges. Leiognathids were also obtained from 3 prawn trawls in Shelburne Bay. This record is an overview entry for biological data collected on Southern Surveyor cruise SS 02/95. This cruise took place in the Gulf of Carpentaria during 13 February - 19 March 1995, under the leadership of John Salini. Biological data collected on this cruise include samples from 153 paired bycatch reduction device (BRD) prawn trawls, 4 multi-level beam trawls (MBT) and 43 environmentally friendly net (EFN) trawls. Clear video images of fish behaviour in the BRD codends of the prawn net and the EFN were also obtained. 130 fish specimens were collected for the Hobart Fish Taxonomy Group's Handbook of Commercial Fishes. Scombrids and cephalopds were collected for QDPI Fisheries. Tissue samples from L. malabaricus, L. sebae and other species were obtained for population genetic studies for the Hobart genetics group. Queensland Museum and AIMS collected sponges and invertebrates and two acoustic recordings of trawler noise and background fish sounds. 3 species of Thenus were collected for University of Queensland. 11 turtles were also tagged during prawn trawling. This cruise took place in the North West Shelf during 7 August - 1 September 1997, under the leadership of A. Whitelaw. Biological data collected on this cruise include numerous demersal fish and invertebrate samples; length-frequency data for 14 species of fish, and numerous otolith samples from four major species; additional fish specimens from two deeper water trawls (east of the Rowley Shoals), at 310 m and 105 m; photographs of fish and invertebrates for taxonomic studies and the "Handbook of Australian Seafood"; SDL (submersible data logger) data from 3 hydrographic transects and 35mm photography of 50% of the random trawl stations were obtained. 184 humpback whales, 24 unidentified cetaceans and about 175 dolphins were observed by Environment Australia personnel.
