Woody Extent and Foliage Projective Cover - Spot, OEH algorithm, NSW
This dataset contains maps of woody vegetation extent and woody foliage projective cover (FPC) for New South Wales at 5 metre resolution. Woody vegetation is a key feature of our landscape and an integral part of our society. We value it because it contributes to the economy, protects the land, provides us with recreation, and gives refuge to the unique and diverse range of fauna that we regard so highly. Yet it poses a significant threat to us in times of fire and storm. So information about trees is vital for a range of business, property planning, monitoring, risk assessment, and conservation activities. The datasets are: Woody vegetation extent. A presence/absence map showing areas of trees and shrubs, taller than two metres, that are visible at the resolution of the imagery used in the analysis. This shows the location, extent, and density of foliage cover for stands of woody vegetation, enabling identification of small features such as trees in paddocks and scattered woodlands through to the largest expanses of forest in the State. Woody extent products contain 'bcu' in the file name. Woody foliage projective cover (FPC). FPC is a measure of the proportion of the ground area covered by foliage (or photosynthetic tissue) held in a vertical plane and is a measure of canopy density. Woody FPC products contain 'bcv' in the file name. Both mosaics and tiles are available, along with a shape file that identifies the location of the tiles.

The Department of Planning provides support to Local Government to enable evidence-based planning decisions. Biodiversity and Conservation Division collaborated with Cessnock City Council in 2021-2022 to deliver environmental map layers (Environmental Lands Study) that facilitate council’s review of their Local Environment Plan. This dataset is one of those and delineates woody vegetation at fine scale across the 196,468-hectare Cessnock Local Government Area (LGA). All tenures were mapped excluding National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) estate because they are formally reserved and protected under Local Environment Plans and were outside of the scope of the Environmental Lands Study. Data is in vector format and was produced to a scale range of 1:500 – 1:3000 and captures individual trees or shrubs with diameters down to 3m whilst excluding and eliminating shadow effects. The dataset is an accurate fine-scale baseline woody dataset for the Cessnock LGA that is current with the image dates of 2017-19 in the east and 2011 for a small area in the far west. From here on the layer will require maintenance and updating as landuse and landcover changes over time. However, the layer’s accuracy means that maintenance and update requirements are minimal in terms of mapping expertise and resources. Either field verified data or newer high-resolution imagery can be used to perform maintenance and updating of the layer.

The NSW 5m Woody Extent is a state-wide binary classification of woody vegetation derived from multitemporal 5m SPOT-5 satellite imagery. The product broadly identifies isolated tree crowns as well as contigous forest at a 5m resolution. This latest map of woody vegetation extent for NSW is the highest detailed to date. It shows the location and extent of woody vegetation in NSW for the year 2011. It can be used to identify small features such as paddock trees and trees in scattered woodlands, to the largest expanses of forest in the state. It is intended for use in non-urban environments and its accuracy for urban environments has not been assessed. The dataset is also used as a spatial constraint for a seamless map of woody foliage projection cover (FPC). FPC is the fraction of the ground that is obscured by green leaf, and is a measure of density. The FPC dataset is delivered as a separate map to the woody extent (although it is constrained by it), and it can also be requested from the OEH data broker. The woody extent product was derived from user-driven thresholds on an index of woody probability. The probability was calculated from a binomial logistic regression model on multi-temporal data. The model utilsed the statistics from SPOT-5 imagery over 2008-2012 and referenced over 26000 training points. Comprehensive manual corrections were also performed throughout 2013-2014 at a scale of 1:15000. The dataset is provided in 8-bit raster format with the following attributes values: 1 = Woody 0 = Non-Woody 255 = null (either outside the NSW boundary or a perennial water feature) Overall state accuracy is recorded at 90.1% when compared to Lidar datasets (see lineage for more information), and 88% when compared to 6670 visually derived validation points. FPC values: To convert woody FPC pixel values (101 - 200) to standard units of FPC apply the following equation: FPC = pixel_value * 0.01 – 1.0 For example a pixel value of 101 is a FPC of 0.01, and a pixel value of 150 is a FPC of 0.50 etc.
Statewide Landcover and Trees Study (SLATS) Woody Vegetation Change Report

The Statewide Landcover and Trees Study (SLATS) monitors woody vegetation extent and changes in Queensland using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery as its primary tool. This dataset provides annual summaries of woody vegetation clearing and regrowth from the 2018–19 reporting period onward, aligning with an updated Sentinel-2-based methodology introduced in 2018. The data is presented as annual time series summaries, with each year’s data corresponding to a nominal August-to-August reporting period. Summary statistics are provided at the state-wide scale, as well as for administrative boundaries, natural resource management regions and divisions, and other authoritative datasets. This multi-year dataset includes data from the 2018–19 onwards SLATS reporting periods. It supersedes and is not directly comparable with SLATS data published for reporting periods up to and including 2017–18, due to a methodological change. Note that regrowth was not reported in 2018–19; values for regrowth in that year are represented as zero in the dataset.
