The West Africa Coastal Vulnerability Mapping: Subset of JRC Map of Accessibility data set is a 30 arc-second raster of travel time to major cities in West Africa within 200 kilometers of the coast. Extensive literature shows that road networks and market accessibility play an important role in development and access to health care and other social services. Greater spatial isolation is assumed to produce higher vulnerability to climate stressors. Market accessibility is defined as the travel time to a location of interest using land (road/off road) or water (navigable river, lake, and ocean) based travel. A team at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, created a global raster of accessibility using a cost-distance algorithm which computes the "cost" (in Units of time) of traveling between two locations on a regular raster grid. The raster grid cells contain values which represent the cost required to travel across them, hence this raster grid is often termed a friction-surface. The friction-surface contains information on the transport network, and environmental and political factors that affect travel times between locations. Transport networks can include road and rail networks, navigable rivers, and shipping lanes. The locations of interest are termed targets, and in the case of this data set, the targets are cities with a population of 50,000 or greater in the year 2000.

A Canadian project addresses the need to invest in gender-responsive strategies, action plans and policies.

In this project, the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve and Rutgers University, who have collaborated for more than a decade to develop coastal resilience tools, streamlined and enhanced existing mapping and decision-support tools for New Jersey coastal communities. The result was New Jersey Flood Mapper, an interactive, user-centered web tool that enables decision-makers to visualize exposure from coastal flooding hazards. The tool operationalizes a total water level concept developed by Rutgers climate resilience experts to allow planners to evaluate a range of flood conditions and time horizons. Enhanced map overlaps and data layers that show physical infrastructure, evacuation routes, and socio-demographic information are integrated into the tool to give a fuller picture of community vulnerability. New Jersey Flood Mapper offers coastal decision makers a go-to resource to assess and plan for potential risks to people and property from future storms and flooding. This catalyst project was funded by NOAA through the National Estuarine Research Reserve System Science Collaborative to advance collaborative science. It did not produce any new data.

The department periodically conducts evaluations of Global Affairs Canada priorities, programs and projects. Evaluation serves as a practical management tool for reviewing performance of programs and activities. The information gathered through an evaluation helps improve the design as well as the implementation of upcoming programs and initiatives. A report is generated for each evaluation conducted.

The G7 is a forum designed for frank and open discussion between leaders, ministers and policy-makers. As a member of the G7, Canada plays a leading role on the international stage and is able to advance domestic and international priorities. The G7 provides global leadership and serves as a powerful catalyst on issues that are later taken up by other fora with broader global and regional membership. The G7 brings together the world’s advanced economies to influence global trends and tackle pervasive and crosscutting issues, as well as emergent global crises. The G7 has strengthened international economic and security policies, advanced discussion of global issues including climate change and gender equality, brought donors together and supported disarmament programs. Most recently, the G7 has worked to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and respond to Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. At the G7, Canada has advanced its domestic and international priorities, including gender equality, peace and security, climate change and building a sustainable global economy. Transparent and inclusive engagement with Canadian and international stakeholders has helped Canada to deliver on priorities that are important to Canadians.
