Significant Landforms of Alberta
The Significant Landforms of Alberta dataset contains significant (provincially, nationally or internationally) geomorphic features within the province of Alberta, for distribution external to the Government of Alberta. These data have been assembled by Alberta Parks, in collaboration with the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS), with contributions from other subject matter experts in Alberta.

These features include eskers, meltwater channels, moraines as well as features either parrallel to or transverse to ice movement direction (small ridges, elongated hummocks and depressions, flutes and drumlins).

Natural Regions and Subregions of Alberta

This dataset defines the ecological areas of Alberta known as the Natural Regions and Natural Subregions, as defined in 2004/2005. This dataset is intended to allow for the stratification of the province of Alberta based on ecological criteria. Natural Regions are the largest mapped ecological units in Alberta's classification system. They are defined geographically on the basis of landscape patterns, notably vegetation, soils and physiographic features. Natural Subregions are subdivisions of a Natural Region, generally characterized by vegetation, climate, elevation, and latitudinal or physiographic differences within a given Region.The intended scale of use of this product is 1:250 000. This version is 2005 Final. Linework changes from the previous Natural Subregion delineation are due both to better information and refined subregion definitions. Note that the Athabasca Plain subregion has been moved into the Boreal Natural Region and that the Boreal Highlands has now been split into Lower and Upper. This data comprises the polygon features from AGS Map 213, 'Quaternary Geology, Central Alberta', compiled by I. Shetsen. Field work was conducted between 1981 and 1983, and the map was published in 1987 at 1:500,000 scale. See AGS Map 213 for data sources used in the compilation.

This map displays the distribution of the main soil types found within the province of Alberta. The distribution pattern of soils in Alberta is strongly linked to climate and parent materials. Climate affects the location of different soil groups. The driest area in southeastern Alberta is represented by the presence of Brown Chernozems. As one proceeds north and west, the soils and associated vegetation reflect the increase in available moisture.In Alberta, Organic soils generally occur in association with Luvisolic soils. These soils form under wet conditions where the organic layer (greater than 30% organic matter) accumulates faster than it decomposes. The organic layer varies in thickness from 40 to 160+ cm, and under natural conditions, the water table is at or near the surface. In some areas of the province, Organic soils may be artificially drained and used for agricultural production. This resource was created in 2002 using ArcGIS.

This data comprises the polygon features from AGS Map 207, 'Quaternary Geology, Southern Alberta', compiled by I. Shetsen. Field work was conducted between 1981 and 1983, and the map was published in 1987 at 1:500,000 scale. The dataset covers an area between Townships 1 and 36 and Ranges 1 west of the 4th Meridian to Range 7 west of the 5th Meridian. See AGS Map 207 for data sources used in the compilation.

The dataset is to help Government of Alberta Staff and external consultants to determine which Biologist is responsible for and has authority over each region.
