Inventory of macroalgae and benthic macroinvertebrates on the north shore of the Saint-Lawrence Estuary (2019)
This inventory, conducted from September 26th to October 3th, 2019, aimed to describe the community structure of macroalgae and benthic macroinvertebrates of five small estuaries of the Upper North Shore of Quebec, namely Barthélemy Bay and the Colombier, Mistassini, Franquelin and Saint-Nicolas rivers. This inventory is part of a doctoral study of Valentine Loiseau on the global changes in the St. Lawrence system, mainly the study of marine benthic communities in response to changes of salinity, to ensure proper management of the environment in the face of future changes. The main objective is to describe the structure and the levels of specific diversities of mediolittoral communities of benthic macroinvertebrates and macroalgae along a salinity gradient.  These five small estuaries were selected because of their similar size, hard substrates and easy access. Three levels of hypoosmotic stress (low, medium, high) and one control level (seawater) were used for each of the selected estuaries, with eight quadrats per stress level. Quadrat positions were randomly selected but had to meet two criteria: (1) regular height in the foreshore to control the influence of other stresses (temperature, exposure); and (2) presence of at least one macroalga to maintain homogeneity. A percentage cover by macroalgal and macroinvertebrate species was estimated, and then all organisms were weighed by species and size group. The salinity of the nearest water point was measured at mid-tide with a portable refractometer and a Castaway-type CTD (Conductivity-Temperature-Density) probe. The inventory was done using a stratified random sampling design and the sampling unit was a quadrat measuring 25 x 25 cm. The three files provided (DarwinCore format) are complementary and are linked by the "eventID" key. The "event_information" file includes the generic information of the quadrat, including date and location. The "additional_information_event_and_occurrence" file includes salinity and substrate type of the quadrat, as well as the total weight of all individuals of the same species caught in the quadrat extrapolated to one square metre of surface. For nudibranchs and barnacles, weight was estimated from the size of the individuals so that they were not removed from the environment. The "taxon_occurrence" file includes the taxonomic inventory of macroalgal and benthic macroinvertebrate species observed in the quadrat, identified to the lowest possible species or taxonomic level and biomass by identified species. For quality control, organisms were identified on the field using the following guide: Chabot, Robert et Anne Rossignol. 2003. Algues et faune du littoral du Saint-Laurent maritime : Guide d'identification. Institut des Sciences de la mer de Rimouski, Rimouski ; Pêches et Océans Canada (Institut Maurice-Lamontagne), Mont-Joli. 113 pages. The taxonomy was checked against the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) to match recognized standards and using the R obistools and worrms libraries. The WoRMS match was placed in the "scientificNameID" field of the occurrence file. All sample locations were spatially validated. This project was funded by DFO Coastal Environmental Baseline Program under Canada’s Oceans Protection Plan. This initiative aims to acquire environmental baseline data contributing to the characterization of important coastal areas and to support evidence-based assessments and management decisions for preserving marine ecosystems.

Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence Ecosystem Research Vessel Survey (September Survey, NAFO Division 4T) Dataset
공공데이터포털
PURPOSE: The research survey provides a fisheries-independent source of information about all marine living organisms that are captured by the fishing trawl used to obtain samples in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. DESCRIPTION: Tow, catch, length frequency, and biological information for fish caught during the annual September research vessel trawl surveys in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (NAFO Division 4T). Abundance indices and spatial distribution patterns of commercial and non-commercial groundfish. The catch data that appear in this dataset SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR ECOLOGICAL ANALYSES INVOLVING CATCH RATES. Important factors such as vessel, fishing gear and diurnal periods must be accounted for to use these data in analyses. Please contact the data custodians if you are interested in using this data for any kind of ecological analyses involving catch rates. PARAMETERS COLLECTED: abundance estimates (ecological); distribution (ecological); species counts (ecological); gear (fishing); vessel information (fishing); point (spatial) NOTES ON QUALITY CONTROL: Scientific names listed in the survey species list have been mapped to recognized standards - marine taxa have been mapped to the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) using their online taxon match tool. All sampling locations were plotted on a map to perform a visual check confirming that the latitude and longitude coordinates were within the described sampling area. In 2003, because of a fire aboard the Alfred Needler, the Wilfred Templeman was used for the survey. However, no comparative fishing experiments have been conducted between the Alfred Needler and the Wilfred Templeman. We are therefore unable to integrate the indices derived for 2003 to the remainder of the survey time-series. SAMPLING METHODS: Sampling Method: Consult the "Protocols for research vessel cruises within the Gulf Region (dermersal fish) (1970-1980)" report, link provided in the citations list. USE LIMITATION: To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
American Samoa Reef Macroinvertebrate Inventory, 1992, (NODC Accession 9900054)
공공데이터포털
This data set includes data from a 1992 survey of the American Samoa coral reef ecosystem, collected as part of the American Samoa Coastal Resources Inventory (ASCRI), partly funded by Sea Grant. This component of the study focuses on a systematic inventory of conspicuous marine macroinvertebrate observations. Coral reefs of American Samoa support a diverse fauna of benthic invertebrates other than scleractinian corals that is characteristic of the tropical Indo-West Pacific region delineated by Ekman (1953). Sponges, nonscleractinian cnidarians, molluscs, and echinoderms comprised the major elements of the 83 species of conspicuous, epibenthicinvertebrates recorded in this survey. Sampling methods employed in this survey were adapted to gather maximum qualitative data within a finite timeframe. Therefore, highly motile and cryptic species of invertebrates are under-represented in the information presented herein, and infaunal invertebrates are excluded. These data are filed were filed at the National Oceanographic Data Center under NODC Accession #9900054.
2016 South Manitou Island, MI Benthic Cover-Geodatabase
공공데이터포털
This dataset has been developed for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Office for Coastal Management (OCM) as a collaborative and cooperative project with the National Park Service (Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore). A workflow combining photointerpretation, object-based image analysis, field verification, and expert manual interpretation has produced benthic habitat maps including CMECS Substrate and Biotic Components for a 42km2 project area at South Manitou Island in Lake Michigan. The Substrate and Biotic Components were classified to at least the CMECS Subclass level. For both components, Co-Occurring Elements and Modifiers (i.e. Percent Cover, Induration, Surface Pattern) were added to provide further detail to CMECS units. Refer to project report for example images and corresponding CMECS classifications. This file geodatabase contains the Substrate and Biotic components as separate feature layers. Several existing data sets formed the source for the mapping effort, including underwater photography, aerial imagery, and acoustic backscatter (side-scan and multi-beam sonar). High-resolution LIDAR data was also collected around the island in 2016 which also was used to support the mapping. Field observations were collected over 2 days in August 2017 to assure the accuracy of the map products. In addition to the Substrate and Botic data, this file Geodatabase also contains field validation points collected during summer of 2017, a GPS navigation track for each field site, and digital video clips for many of the sites.
Macroalgae and seagrass biomass and diversity across the Pilbara Region in November 2013 and May 2014
공공데이터포털
As part of the Pilbara Marine Conservation Partnership (PMCP), coral reef surveys of reef macroalgae species (including seagrasses) were undertaken between northern Ningaloo and the Dampier Archipelago. This dataset contains biomass estimates (g DW m-2 and g WW m-2) of macrophytes collected in shallow reef areas in the Pilbara region during two sampling trips: November 2013 and May 2014. Surveys were undertaken using using SCUBA at depths between 2-13m, with macroalgae and seagrasses identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. The data include: * Macroalgae and seagrass diversity (0.25 square metre quadrats) * Macroalgae and seagrass species composition and biomass per quadrat (0.25 square metre) These data were collected to estimate macrophyte biomass in shallow reef areas across the Pilbara region in two contrasting seasons. These data are an output of the Pilbara Marine Conservation Partnership (PMCP) Coral Reef Health Theme.
