Cypher Environmental looks to broaden its export reach to the world
Joseph Kurgat has made a remarkable journey. After qualifying as an accountant in his native Kenya, he came to Canada to further his studies and then joined Cypher Environmental Ltd. (Cypher), a Winnipeg, Manitoba-based manufacturer of environmentally friendly road-making materials. Today, at just 26 years old, Kurgat manages Cypher’s production plant.

The Canadian Technology Accelerator (CTA) program, administered by Global Affairs Canada since 2013, was introduced to facilitate the international expansion of high-potential Canadian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Previous reports, including the "Results and Outcomes Report 2019-2020" and the program evaluation for the Federal Government budget renewal in 2023, have highlighted positive outcomes such as increased revenue, job creation, and capital raised for CTA firms. This study starts by finding similar correlations. Firms that participated in the CTA experienced accelerated growth in revenue, assets, payroll, expenditures, Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SRED) expenditures, and investment in machinery and equipment.

The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is a mega regional trade agreement that involves 11 countries spanning the entire the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. Canada is among the first six countries to have ratified the CPTPP on December 30, 2018, along with Australia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Singapore. The Agreement was later ratified by Vietnam on January 14, 2019, and most recently by Peru on September 19, 2021.

Export diversity is important to hedge against the risk of an economic downturn in partner economies, but it also helps to protect against the threat of trade protectionism. Protectionism is materializing across the world, not only through the United States imposing tariffs on imports of Canadian metal, but also in other events such as Brexit.
