Food Microbiology - Targeted Surveys - Final Report - Bacterial Pathogens and Indicators in Fresh Baby Leafy Vegetables - April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2021
A targeted survey tested 3172 samples of baby leafy vegetables for the presence of the pathogens Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella species, and E. coli O157. Over 99.5% of the samples tested were found to be satisfactory. When necessary, the CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities. No product recalls were required.

Between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2024, the CFIA tested 858 samples of fresh and frozen seaweed salad for the presence of E. coli O157, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, and generic E. coli. Of the samples tested, 98.1% were found to be satisfactory and required no further action. Samples that were found to be unsatisfactory underwent further actions, including further testing.

A 3-year targeted survey analysed 891 samples of plant-based milk alternatives for the presence of the pathogens Salmonella species and Listeria monocytogenes. All samples were also tested for total coliforms and Aerobic Colony Count. Overall, the survey results indicate that plant-based milk alternatives sold in Canada are generally safe for consumption.

A targeted survey analyzed 2595 samples of frozen fruits and vegetables for smoothies for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) and generic Escherichia coli (E. coli). Additionally, of the 2595 samples, 1800 were tested for Salmonella species (Salmonella spp.) and E. coli O157. Salmonella spp., E. coli O157 and generic E. coli were not found in any of the samples. L. monocytogenes was found in 1 sample. The CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities. No illnesses were reported in association with the positive sample.

A targeted survey tested 162 samples of powdered infant cereal for Enterobacteriaceae and 199 samples of children's breakfast cereals for Salmonella species, Enterobacteriaceae and Aerobic Colony Count. 96.9% of the powdered infant cereal and 97.5% of children's breakfast cereal samples were assessed as satisfactory. When necessary, the CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities. No product recalls were required.
