Food Microbiology - Targeted Surveys - Scientific Publication - Norovirus GI and GII and hepatitis A virus in berries and pomegranate arils in Canada, 2016 to 2021
Between 2016 and 2021, 4218 samples of fresh and frozen berries and pomegranate arils were collected at retail stores across Canada and tested for the presence of norovirus GI, norovirus GII and hepatitis A virus RNA. Overall, the prevalence of norovirus GI and GII RNA together in fresh and frozen fruit samples in Canada was 0.36%. None of the fresh or frozen fruit samples tested positive for hepatitis A virus RNA.

A targeted survey analyzed 1149 samples of ready-to-eat fresh-cut fruits for the presence of Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) and Norovirus (NoV) genetic material (RNA). HAV RNA was detected in 3 samples and NoV RNA was detected in 2 samples. The CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities. No illnesses were reported in association with any of the positive samples and no product recalls were required.

A targeted survey analyzed 1,991 samples of fresh berries and frozen fruits for viruses. 99.6% of the samples were found to be free of viruses. Samples were analyzed for hepatitis A (HAV), norovirus (NoV) (Genotype I and II (GI, GII)) and human rotavirus (HRV) RNA. HAV and NoV (GI) RNA were not detected in any of the samples tested. NoV (GII) RNA was detected in 7 samples. The CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities for all viral RNA positive samples. The CFIA tested 829 samples of whole or trimmed fresh leafy herbs and 230 whole or trimmed fresh leafy vegetables for Hepatitis A and Norovirus GI and GII. 99.9% of the fresh leafy herb and 100% of the fresh leafy vegetable samples tested were found to be satisfactory. CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities. There were no reported illnesses related to these products.

A targeted survey analyzed 221 samples of air-packed sun-dried tomatoes for viruses. Of those samples, 99.1% were found to be free of viruses. Samples were analyzed for Hepatitis A (HAV) and Norovirus (NoV) (Genotype I and II (GI, GII)). NoV (GI) RNA was not detected in any of the samples tested. HAV RNA was detected in one imported sample and NoV (GII) RNA was also detected in one imported sample. The CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities for all viral RNA positive samples. No illnesses were reported in association with any of the positive samples.

A targeted survey analyzed 2595 samples of frozen fruits and vegetables for smoothies for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) and generic Escherichia coli (E. coli). Additionally, of the 2595 samples, 1800 were tested for Salmonella species (Salmonella spp.) and E. coli O157. Salmonella spp., E. coli O157 and generic E. coli were not found in any of the samples. L. monocytogenes was found in 1 sample. The CFIA conducted appropriate follow-up activities. No illnesses were reported in association with the positive sample.

A targeted survey analysed 1782 samples of imported fresh berries for the presence of Cyclospora cayetanensis, Cryptosporidium species and Toxoplasma gondii. 99.9% of the samples tested were found to be satisfactory. Overall, our survey results indicate that imported fresh berries sold in Canada are generally safe for consumption.
