This GIS dataset is part of a digital compilation of the bedrock geology of Alberta. It is one of the datasets used to produce Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Map 600. This dataset contains 1) geological units that are represented by lines because they are too narrow to represent as polygons at 1:1 000 000 scale. 2) stratigraphic terminology boundaries that represent the approximate locations of where the names applied to intervals of strata change. These commonly correspond to lateral facies changes, which are gradational. The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format. AGS Open File Report 2013-02 presents additional information on data sources related to this dataset.

This GIS dataset is part of a digital compilation of the bedrock geology of Alberta. It is one of the datasets used to produce Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Map 600. This dataset contains lines representing linear structural elements. In the Rocky Mountains and Foothills these include thrust faults, normal faults and transverse faults as well as the axes of folds (anticlines and synclines). In the Canadian Shield and the Athabasca Basin all faults are given the same symbol (i.e., fault, type unspecified). The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format. This GIS dataset is part of a digital compilation of the bedrock geology of Alberta. It is one of the datasets used to produce Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) Map 600. This dataset represents the compilation of existing geological maps and original geological mapping by AGS staff. Mapping in support of the dataset included field observations and creating three-dimensional models of subsurface stratigraphy based on the interpretation of geophysical logs from oil and gas wells. Each three-dimensional formation surface was projected to a model of the bedrock surface, and the intersection formed the first approximation of the position of the geological contact at the base of the surficial deposits. We adjusted these preliminary contacts to honour outcrop data and the interpretation of the bedrock unit immediately below surficial deposits in individual wells. The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format. This data set comprises the bedrock geology of Alberta in geographic information systems (GIS) format. The GIS coverage was originally prepared by digitizing Map 027, 1972, Alberta Geological Survey, Alberta Research Council. Revisions since 1972 have incorporated new mapping data from work by the Alberta Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Canada, and by the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists through the contribution of its membership to the Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. The coverage shows the formation and geologic age of the bedrock subcrop, as well as the nature of the contacts between formations. GIS files are distributed as shapefiles of bedrock polygons (geol_py_ll.shp), bedrock line features (bdrk_ln_ll.shp), and bedrock contacts (geol_ln_ll.shp).

This dataset is a GIS version of Map 226, which is a regional synthesis of published and unpublished maps. The data represent 100 m elevation contours of the bedrock subcrop for Alberta. The southern part of Alberta, from 49 to 56 degrees north, was primarily compiled from existing 1:250,000 bedrock topography maps. The interpretation of the remaining northern portion of Alberta was based mostly on limited borehole data and information from existing 1:250,000 hydrogeological maps.

Bedrock Topography of Alberta (gridded data, ASCII format)

The bedrock topography of Alberta is the surface of the top of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene bedrock, and reveals geomorphic features created by Paleogene to Recent river systems and Quaternary glaciation. This grid is a computer-generated geostatistical model of the bedrock topography of Alberta using previously published information from Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) maps and reports, as well as new data. The quality of this data has been assessed and then a quality-weighting approach was applied to the dataset prior to interpolation. The surface was modelled using a 500m x 500m grid cell spacing, and as such should not be used for local scale studies. This grid represents the surface portrayed in AGS Map 602, Bedrock Topography of Alberta, and this grid will continue to be updated as part of the Alberta Geological Framework project. Explanatory notes, references, and data sources appear on a supplementary page to accompany Map 602. These notes describe the distribution of physiographic terrain elements of the bedrock surface across Alberta, and the data sources and geostatistical methods used to interpolate this surface.
Alberta industrial mineral deposits and occurrences (GIS data, point features)

The AMDO (Alberta Mineral Deposits and Occurrences) application was created by the Minerals and Coal Geoscience Section of the Alberta Geological Survey as a database for mineral deposits in Alberta in the early 1990s. It was originally released as Open File Report OFR 1991-17. Industrial minerals from that data source have been extracted into Microsoft Access, their locations refined or corrected and presented in GIS format.

The Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin was designed primarily as a reference volume documenting the subsurface geology of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. This GIS dataset is one of a collection of shapefiles representing part of Chapter 16 of the Atlas, Triassic Strata of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Figure 1, Index Map of Triassic Rocks. Shapefiles were produced from archived digital files created by the Alberta Geological Survey in the mid-1990s, and edited in 2005-06 to correct, attribute and consolidate the data into single files by feature type and by figure.
Surficial Geology of Alberta, 1:1,000,000 scale (GIS data, polygon features)

This GIS dataset is a compilation of existing surficial map information for Alberta, edited for mapping continuity and generalized to make it suitable for presentation and use at 1:1,000,000 scale. It is the dataset used to create Alberta Geological Survey Map 601: Surficial Geology of Alberta. The data were prepared from an intermediate dataset (Alberta Geological Survey DIG 2013-0001), which was edgematched and then the boundaries between similar polygons were 'dissolved.' The residual dataset was then generalized selectively using the Geological Survey of Canada's GeoScaler software. We then added attributes describing the generalized polygons, including unit description, texture, genetic group, and geological age. The data were created as an Esri file geodatabase feature class and exported for public distribution as an Esri shapefile called Surf1M_py_ll.shp. The layer file Surf1M_py_ll.lyr is also included for the convenience of Esri software users (version 9.2).
