Chemistry of groundwater, pore water, and surface water near wetland P1 in the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Sutsman County, ND - August 2013
Groundwater, soil pore water, and surface water were collected in and near wetland P1 in the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota in August 2013. Groundwater was collected from established wells (17, 18, and 22) via peristaltic pump. Surface water was collected from P1 ponded water via grab sample. Soil pore water was collected using drive point samplers and one suction lysimeter. Water samples were analyzed for pH and major ion chemistry.

This U.S. Geological Survey data release contains chemical, isotopic, and physical data from wetland pond water samples collected at the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota, USA. Samples were collected monthly during the growing season (April or May through September) in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019 and in August 2018. Temperature, specific conductance, and pH were measured in situ. Major cations, select trace cations, chloride, fluoride, sulfate, and nitrate were determined for all samples. Stable oxygen and hydrogen isotope ratios of water were determined for samples collected from 2015 to 2017. Total dissolved nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, absorbance at 254 nm, and stable carbon isotope ratios of dissolved inorganic carbon were determined for samples collected in 2015 and 2016. Dissolved ammonium and phosphate were determined for samples collected in 2016 and April and May 2017.

This data release presents data that were collected as part of a larger effort to assess factors that regulate metabolism in global lakes, via an international collaboration with the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON). From May to August 2019, dissolved oxygen and light penetration were measured throughout the water-depth profile of two small inland wetlands at Cottonwood Lake Study Area in North Dakota, USA. Water temperature and wind data also were collected, and recent water column chemistry (carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen) data from the summer of 2016 were compiled. Data from this collaborative study will be used to calculate gross primary production, and investigate how lake metabolism varies with lake size, light availability, and carbon and nutrient concentrations.
