The accession contains Ocean Station; Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD); Bathythermograph (XBT); Aerial XBT (AXBT); and Current data. The data was collected in Sea of Japan from 452 stations. Data was collected by Japanese Hydrographic Office, Republic of Korea (south Korea), and Peoples Republic of China. The data was submitted to NODC by Japan in five files. The data was collected between June 7, 1989 and June 10, 1993 using multiple ships from multiple countries.

The accession contains water temperature and depth data collected from LEXA MAERSK and many other ships from September 1987 to April 1988. Data was collected by Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA. The bathythermograph XBT data is available in C116 file format of NODC.

A 9-track, 6250 BPI magnetic tape was submitted by the Japanese Oceanographic Data Center (JODC) as part of the Data Rescue and Archaeology project. Data is an ocean observation summary file collected by the Japanese Fisheries Agency of sea surface temperatures between April 1, 1987 and December 31, 1987. Data were recorded in ASCII; the documentation includes details of the file format. Dr. Osamu Yamada of JODC submitted data containing 134,721 observations.

Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) data for March 1994 was provided by Kunio Sakurai of Japan Meteorological Agency, Tokyo, Japan. SST were collected from ships in El Niño Monitoring Center. Original data were submitted as Monthly Ocean Report March 1994 (No. 15).

The data from the CD-ROM contains the BT Data observed by Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force from 1995 to 2001, Japan Antarctic Research Expedition data up to the 42nd, Serial station data observed by Hydrographic Department before 1945, XBT data observed by Japan Coast Guard from 2002 to 2003, XBT data observed by TOHOKU University and CTD data by Ocean Research Institute, TOKYO University at the MARIANA Trench.

Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard Bathythermograph (XBT) (C116) format. The C116/C118 format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT Data File, in which temperature values were recorded at uniform 5 m intervals, the XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Prior to July 1994, XBT data were routinely processed to one of these standard types. XBT data are now processed and loaded directly in to the NODC Ocean Profile Data Base (OPDB). Historic data from these two data types were loaded into the OPDB.

The data in this accession is dynamic height data collected from line Islands array using multiple ships. The data was collected by Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island, Narragansett, RI between February 22, 1985 and December 16, 1989 and has been published in the following data report. "Donohue, K.,A., M. Wimbush, S.M. Chiswell, and R. Lukas, 1992. Line Islands Array 1985-1989 Data Report: Dynamic Height Time Series. This dataset contains datasets collected over a period of one year. The cruises were conducted using many different ships as part of Shipboard Environmental data Acquisition System (SEAS) III program. The bathythermograph (XBT) data was collected between April 4, 1990 and April 16, 1991. The data were sent from the cruise ships to the National Ocean Service, Rockville, MD via telecommunication. This data containing 934 observations is currently available in the C116 file format of NODC.

Temperature and water density data were collected using meteorological sensors from coastal stations in the Sea of Japan and Yellow Sea. Data were submitted by the Korea Oceanographic Data Center from 01 January 1923 to 31 December 2001.
