Data for dam passage analysis of bigheaded carps in Pools 15-19 of the upper Mississippi River during 2014-2017
Acoustic telemetry data (Vemco, Inc) were collected on invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), bighead carp (H. nobilis) and their hybrids in the upper Mississippi River (navigation pools 15-19) to determine movement patterns and preferred habitats during September 2013 through November 2017. We consolidated these data into intervals of fish within-pool residency and intervals of fish transitions into adjacent navigation pools (i.e., dam passages). The combined data set was then parsed into an "upstream passage" data set (in which downstream passage intervals were censored) and and a "downstream passage" data set (in which upstream passage intervals were censored). We then examined the effects of river hydrology and water temperature on dam passages by bigheaded carps using a complementary log-log model for continuous-time processes to estimate a Cox proportional hazards regression model (Allison 2010).

This dataset accompanies the article "Upstream experience and experimental translocation of invasive bigheaded carps results in increased upstream passage success at a navigation lock in a large river". The data come from the experimental capture and tagging of invasive bigheaded carp with acoustic transmitters and physically moving some groups farther downstream. These transmitters emit signals that are detected and recorded on receivers that are strategically placed above, within, and below Mississippi River Lock and Dam 19 (LD 19). Once the data from the receivers were downloaded, we could show when successful upstream passage through LD19 occurs and compare the origin of the fish and the physical characteristics recorded at the time of tagging. The shipping industry and barge movement data were also included in summaries to evaluate how traffic around these navigation barriers may be preventing or assisting fish movements. To ensure data were being collected with confidence, periodic field testing of the acoustic receiver were performed and included in the final study materials.

The dataset and accompanying analysis scripts accompany the article "Bayesian multistate models allow incorporation of spatial dynamics to improve invasive species management". The data are summarized detections from acoustic telemetry receivers (69 KHz) from 353 silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and 170 bighead carp (H. nobilis) surgically implanted with transmitters in the Illinois River, USA. The analysis scripts assess probability of detection, probability of monthly movement between navigation pools on the river, probability of apparent survival, and probability of operable transmitter battery through a Bayesian multistate hidden Markov model.

To evaluate how bigheaded carps move upstream through and around Starved Rock Lock and Dam (SRLD) on the Illinois River, their movements were monitored using acoustic telemetry. This dataset describes the results of this study and was used to compare the residency duration of upstream migrants downstream of SRLD between years, tailwater elevation, and water temperature, and how tailwater elevation and water temperature influenced their timing of arrival downstream of SRLD. Calculation of passage and residency are available in the thesis of Matthew Lubejko (Southern, Illinois University, 2016).

In the Lamine, Moreau, and Little Chariton rivers, light traps were used to capture larval bigheaded carps moving into tributaries. Traps were set on a weekly basis in each river, at roughly 1-kilometer intervals up to 7 km upstream. Ichthyoplankton tows were done in locations near the confluence of each tributary with the Missouri River, and within the Missouri River itself. Data includes identification of larval fish, size, and developmental information of subsampled invasive carp species. Flow readings were taken at up to five points across the channel with a Marsh-McBirney flow meter, and water quality was measured at the surface with a YSI ProPlus before retrieval of light traps.

This dataset accompanies the article "Off-channel habitat use by silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (H. nobilis) in the upper Mississippi River". Acoustic telemetry data (Innovasea, Inc.) were collected on invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) in Pools 17-19 of the upper Mississippi River to examine timing and environmental conditions associated with off-channel habitat use during 2017–2018. Data also include surface water velocity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and dam discharge from Lock and Dam 19. This dataset includes information derived from a Vemco telemetry array located at Lock and Dam 15 on the Mississippi River near Rock Island, IL and a longitudinal telemetry array that ranges from Pool 14 to Pool 19. Silver carp, bighead carp, and paddlefish were detected with this system. Lock Queue Reports, which detail the daily lock operation for river traffic, were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Temperature data were recorded on the Vemco receivers and stage height data were obtained from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
