Hydraulic Geometry of Stream Channels in the Boston Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma
Fourteen stream reaches associated with stream flow-gaging stations, operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and distributed across the Boston Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma, were selected for analysis. Cross-sectional area, top width, mean depth, streamflow, and floodplain cross-sections were surveyed for these 14 reaches. These data were used to develop regional hydraulic geometry curves relating drainage area to bankfull dimensions . Bed and bar material sampling was conducted at eight reaches to obtain information on the particle-size distributions of the streambed materials and to determine the shapes of the individual particles comprising the streambeds. The stream reaches at each stream gage location were classified using the Rosgen Level II stream type (Rosgen, 1996) based on the average of stream reach channel metrics collected from site cross-sections and profiles. Datasets include a channel geometry analysis from cross-sections, banklines digitized and interpreted to predict future bank erosion sites from aerial photography, and models of floodplain inundation over a range of discharges. There are two MNRR segments, a 39-mile segment downstream from Fort Randall Dam, and a 59-mile segment downstream from Gavins Point Dam. Similar datasets were analyzed for each MNRR segment using similar methods.
