WATER TEMPERATURE and Other Data from DRIFTING PLATFORM From Coastal Waters of California from 1981-05-02 to 1983-05-10 (NCEI Accession 9100219)
Three files of drifting buoy data, collected as part of the Coastal Ocean Dynamics Experiment (CODE) and Observation of Persistent Upwelling Study (OPUS) experiments. Data from files 1 and 2 were collected near Pt. Arena, California in 1981 and 1982; data from file three were collected near Pt. Conception, California in 1983. All files are in ASCII and have the same format; data parameters include date, latitude, longitude, north/south uncertainty, and east/west uncertainty. These data were submitted in a diskette by Russ Davis of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

Upwelling and downwelling irradiances were collected from surface optical drifter buoys off the California coast (NE Pacific limit-180) from 05 May 1993 to 06 December 1996 (non inclusive). Data were collected by the Oregon State University (OSU) Remote Sensing Ocean Optics group (ORSOO). Drifter parameters include sea surface temperatures, downwelling irradiances at 490 nm just above the sea surface, and upwelling radiances at seven wavebands in the visible just beneath the sea surface.

The Current, Temperature and Depth (CTD) data were collected by Naval Postgraduate School from Coastal Waters of California between 2-19 June, 1980 using ship Acania. Bathythermograph (XBT) data were collected at selected depths at intervals of 5m. The data submitted by Dr. Christopher N.K.Mooers in tape have been processed by NODC. The data is available in the C125 Bathythermograph XBT selected depth format as well as F022-CTD Hi resolution format.

The drifting buoy data from 28 drifting buoys in this accession was collected as part of Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (COARE) over a one year period between August 1, 1992 and September 30, 1993. Six French BODEGA drifters (SERPE-IESM, GUIDEL, 56, FRANCE TRISTAR) were deployed in August 1992 along the 165E meridian and in September 1992 along 156E. Seventeen additional BODEGA surface drifters were deployed in December 1992 and January/February 1993 from R/V Le Noroit along 156E, 4S-5N during the COARE Intensive Observation Period. Deployments were coordinated with a set of surface drifters that were released by Peter Niiler from the University of California, San Diego. Data was submitted by Yves Du Penhoat, Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre Mer (ORSTOM), Noumea, New Caledonia via FTP. The data is accompanied by good description regarding format etc.

Data from 42 drifter deployments were released by Dr. Phil Richardson of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Some of the data were collected jointly with Dr. Robert Cheney while at the University of Rhode Island. The data were collected from October 1974 to April 1980 in the North Western Atlantic. Each drifter has its own reference number starting with L00717 and ending in L00759. The documentation includes floater format and file organization.
