Abundance and run timing of adult salmon in the Andreafsky River at Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska
Hourly counts of all fish species observed at the Andreafsky Weir. Data are derived from weir video feed for available years 2015-2023. Counts were done hour by hour for 24 hours a day unless maintenance was required or conditions disrupted the video feed. NA delineates times in which the video feed was not active while 0 delineates that no fish were counted for that hour. All species have been standardized and counted every year since the implementation of the video feed.

Tabular dataset containing daily and cumulative counts of all fish species apart from Chum and Chinook salmon detected and recorded at the Andreafsky weir for the years 1994 through 2019, 2021, and 2023. Species included differed year by year depending on what was observed at the weir. Counts were done manually at the weir until the introduction of a video feed in 2007. NA refers to missing data whereas 0 refers to no observation made. Data was compiled by Randy Brown and Jeff Melagari for years 1994 through 2016. For 2017 on, data was taken from post season reports.

Tabular dataset containing age, sex, and length data for Chum, Chinook, and Sockeye salmon. Sex was determined externally using visual clues such as snout shape and size. Length was measured from fork to mid-eye with a measuring board to the closest 5 mm. Strata refers to the potion of the run the fish was sampled during. Strata data is based on the size of the population rather than date since the salmon run does not start on one specific date year by year. Scales were also taken and placed on a gum card for age assessment. One scale was taken for all sampled Chum salmon and three scales were taken for all sampled Chinook salmon.

Radio telemetry was used to determine the distribution, locate spawning sites, and evaluate the tagging response of wild Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha returning to a large, free-flowing river basin. A total of 2,860 fish were radio tagged in the lower Yukon River and tracked upriver. Fish traveled to spawning areas throughout the basin, ranging from several hundred to over 3,000 km from the tagging site. We found similar distribution patterns across years, suggesting that the major components of the return were identified. Most spawning fish were clustered in a number of principal tributaries, although small numbers of fish were located in other spatially-isolated areas. The cumulative contribution of these minor stocks was appreciable, making up 28-31% of the tagged sample. There was suggestive evidence of mainstem spawning in upper reaches of the basin. Large-scale elevation and physiographic data were useful in categorizing spawning areas, with most fish returning to relatively entrenched upland rivers. Fish were largely absent in lowland reaches characterized by meandering, low gradient, alluvial channels often associated with main river floodplains. The fish generally responded well to the capture, handling, and tagging procedures with most (2,790, 97.6%) resuming upriver movements, although the fish initially displayed a negative tagging response, with slower migration rates observed immediately after release. The duration of this response was relatively short (several days) and less severe as the fish moved upriver. The swimming speeds of radio-tagged fish after the initial delay were comparable to estimates for untagged fish, further suggesting that the capture, handling, and tagging methods used were relatively benign. Identifying the primary components of the run (including both major and minor stocks) and determining site-specific utilization patterns can fundamentally enhance salmon management in large river basins, and facilitate research and conservation efforts.

Riverscape snorkeling surveys of salmonid distribution and abundance before (2007, 2008) and after (2018, 2019) dam removal on the Elwha River, Washington

We used snorkel surveys in the Elwha River, conducted in consecutive years before (2007, 2008) and after (2018, 2019) dam removal to assess changes in fish distribution and density. In total, we counted 54,616 Chinook Salmon, Bull Trout, Steelhead, and trout (Rainbow Trout and Coastal Cutthroat Trout combined) in 22 common reaches spanning 65 river kilometers. The occupancy of juvenile Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, and trout was also assessed following dam removal.

The California Monitoring Plan (CMP) salmonid monitoring areas and associated population data are part of an ongoing effort to summarize existing and past salmonid monitoring efforts in the areas identified by Adams et al. 2011. These data are compiled and maintained by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife with the cooperation of monitoring practitioners. Updates and associated outreach are intended to occur on an annual basis. Data were created from several sources and existing datasets: some monitoring areas were accurately depicted using the USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), other monitoring areas were approximated using the monitoring point location and the USGS StreamStats tool to depict the watershed area above that point. The areas are intended to represent the approximate extent of sampling within sub-basins, watershed areas, or regions. For example, the spatial extent of monitoring using a fixed count station is approximated by accounting for all anadromous fish habitat upstream of the sampling location. Therefore, the area is approximated by entering the monitoring location coordinates into the StreamStats tool. The resulting shapefile is then examined to ensure the watershed area did not include habitat above dams or barriers to migration. Areas were clipped when needed. The data user should recognize that errors may have occurred during production of this dataset, changes may have occurred to the external sources used post transfer, and for other possible reasons. The population metrics summarized in the associated tabular data may be regarded as spatially limited, temporally limited, and not considered a complete estimate for the population being described.
