SHRIMP-RG U-Pb zircon geochronology and geochemistry, and whole-rock geochemistry and radioisotope data of select samples from southern California and Arizona, and northern Mexico
This dataset accompanies proposed publication, "Tectonic disruption of the Proterozoic Yavapai-Matzatzal Province boundary near Sierra Hornaday, northwest Sonora", to be published in a Geological Society of America publication, which will report zircon SHRIMP-RG U-Pb ages and Sm-Nd whole rock isotope analyses to map the path of the Yavapai-Matzatzal province boundary across southwest Arizona and northwest Sonora. Samples were collected from the study area by Jon Nourse, Miguel Espinoza, and Erin Stahl (all of Cal. State Polytechnic Univ.), Karl Kellogg, Wayne Premo, Douglas Morton, Jonathan Matti, Barney Poole, and Alex Iriondo (all of the USGS), Thomas Anderson (Univ. of Pittsburgh), Leon Silver and Michael Oskin (all of Cal. Inst. Tech.), and Bryan Kriens (Cal. State Univ., Dominguez Hills), who brought them to the USGS Denver for analysis. The analyses were performed from Dec 2001 to August 2018.

This data set contains tables containing uranium-lead (U-Pb) isotopic data and the crystallization age of zircon from a metamorphic rock from the Manzano Mountains, New Mexico, collected in 2005. The bulk sample was processed into concentrated mineral separates of zircon at the University of Texas at Austin and analyzed by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) research scientists at the Stanford-USGS Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe with Reverse-Geometry (SHRIMP-RG) at Stanford University. The data table "geochronology_SHRIMP-RG_manzanoMtns_jones.csv" accompanying this data release reports the isotopic composition of uranium (U) and thorium (Th) measured in each grain, ratios of two isotopes of lead (207Pb and 206Pb) and two isotopes of uranium (235U and 238U), the age of each grain, and concentrations of selected trace elements measured in each grain. A second table "geochronology_sampleSummary_manzanoMtns_jones.csv" reports the sample location, rock characteristics, and interpreted age. Additionally, a third data table "geochronology_dataDictionary_manzanoMtns_jones.csv" is provided as a reference guide for the user.

These data are for a geochronologic study of emplacement ages for plutons of the Cretaceous Idaho batholith and detrital zircon ages for metasedimentary rocks, west-central Idaho. Zircon from six samples of discrete plutons across a regional transect were dated by sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP). SHRIMP U-Pb ages of igneous rocks connect the igneous activity to structural history, crustal depths, and origins of epigenetic gold-silver-antimony-tungsten±mercury mineral deposits. Zircon from four samples of metasedimentary rocks in the southern part of the central Idaho mineral province were dated - three by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) methods and one by SHRIMP methods - to provide maximum depositional ages and details about original sedimentary provenances. These SHRIMP and LA-ICPMS U-Pb data are shared to meet open data requirements.

This data release includes laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) U-Pb zircon geochronology data to determine the ages of Challis igneous rocks in the Thunder Mountain volcanic field and dikes west of the volcanic field, especially in and near the Stibnite-Yellow Pine mining district, ID. These efforts were made to help understand the stratigraphy and lithologic characteristics of the Challis igneous rocks by determining their absolute ages.
