Data Associated with a Multi-Stage Captive Trial Assessing the Effects of Saxitoxin Ingestion by Common Murres (Uria aalge)
This data set is comprised of results associated with a multi-stage experimental study to determine the effects of paralytic shellfish toxin ingestion by Common Murres (Uria aalge) conducted in 2021-2022. Data is comprised of eight spreadsheets covering each phase of the study including specific bird dosing data, behavioral observation data, foraging trial data, and tissue testing results for Saxitoxin (STX) and related congeners.

Results of algal toxin testing from wildlife mortality submissions to the National Wildlife Health Center

This data set is composed of all animals received as a diagnostic submission to the USGS-National Wildlife Health Center for which algal toxin testing was performed from November 1998 to January 2018. Birds with a histologic diagnosis of avian vacuolar myelinopathy, a disease caused by the algal toxin aetokthonotoxin, are also included. Algal toxins tested for include brevetoxin, cylindrospermopsin, domoic acid, microcystin, and saxitoxin. Case-accession number, species, state collected, month and year collected, and detection or non-detection of the algal toxin is reported.

The methods saxiphilin radioreceptor assay, mammalian Na channel, the commercial cell culture MIST kit, mouse lethality bioassay and HPLC analysis were compared for measuring paralytic shellfish toxins. To compare 5 methods of measuring paralytic shellfish toxins. Proportions of individual paralytic shellfish toxins (STX, dcSTX, neoSTX, GTX1, GTX2, GTX3, GTX4, C1, C2, dcGTX2, dcGTX3) to total toxin content of the samples is given where discernable by HPLC analysis.
