Plasmodium Parasite Infection Data from Mosquitoes Collected in South-central Alaska, 2016
This data set includes two tables associated with a study of Plasmodium parasite infection in mosquitoes collected in south-central Alaska during the summer of 2016. The first table contains data regarding mosquito collection from three sites using CO2 baited CDC light traps. Mosquitoes were sorted and pooled according to collection date, genus, and location and subsequently screened for Plasmodium parasite infection using molecular methods. The second table contains results of Plasmodium parasite screening of pooled mosquito abdomen and head/thorax segments using PCR. Parasite genetic data is provided as GenBank accession numbers for any samples that tested positive for Plasmodium infection.

This dataset includes two spreadsheets associated with a study of three genera of blood parasites (Leucocytozoon, Haemoproteus, Plasmodium) in 185 Spectacled Eiders (Somateria fischeri) sampled in Alaska, 2008-2012. The first spreadsheet provides age, sex, location, and blood parasite (hematozoa) infection data for three different genera of blood parasites. Hematozoa DNA, from eider blood samples, was detected by amplifying a 479bp fragment of the Cytochrome-b gene using a nested PCR technique with primers specific for the three target hematozoa genera. Amplicons were sequenced and assigned to genera by the nucleotide BLAST function of the NCBI GenBank database. Infection data are provided as NCBI GenBank accession numbers for DNA sequences obtained from samples that tested positive for infection. The second spreadsheet provides the geographic coordinates of the five sampling sites.

This data publication contains information collected as part of a field, laboratory, and modeling effort aimed at uncovering ecological drivers of avian malaria transmission and impacts on Hawaiian honeycreepers across an altitudinal gradient on the eastern flank of Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanoes. Forest bird banding data and blood samples for diagnosis of Plasmodium relictum, the agent responsible for avian malaria in Hawaii, were collected from 2001 - 2005 at nine sites ranging 25 to 1,800 m above sea level. This data file reports morphometric data, age, sex, molt status and diagnostic results for avian malaria from native and non-native forest birds that were captured with mist nets at the nine study sites. Related data describing site and sampling coordinate data, mosquito capture data, mosquito avian malaria infection data, and point-transect distance sampling data is available at https://doi.org/10.5066/P95LVJIC. Mosquito capture data consists of counts of mosquitoes captured per trap night during 4-9 trapping nights per site per month over the study period. Mosquito infection data comprises avian malaria diagnostic data for a subset of captured mosquitoes that were dissected and malaria infection determined by microscopic examination of mosquito midguts and salivary glands. Point-transect distance sampling data consists of quarterly bird survey data in which observers recorded the horizontal distance of each sampling point to birds detected by sight and sound during 8-minute counts.
