CTD and other data from ALPHA HELIX from the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound from 1982-11-10 to 1983-03-30 (NCEI Accession 8400007)
This dataset includes data which was collected on the R/V ALPHA HELIX cruises HX37, HX38, HX39, HX40, and HX41, in the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound between 11/10/82 and 3/30/83, by Drs. Royer, Niebauer, Cooney, Shaw, and Kelley of the Institute of Marine Science. Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard High-Resolution CTD/STD (F022) format. The F022 format contains high-resolution data collected using CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) and STD (salinity-temperature-depth) instruments. As they are lowered and raised in the oceans, these electronic devices provide nearly continuous profiles of temperature, salinity, and other parameters. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering or obtained by interpolation and may be reported at depth intervals as fine as 1m. Cruise and instrument information, position, date, time and sampling interval are reported for each station. Environmental data at the time of the cast (meteorological and sea surface conditions) may also be reported. The data record comprises values of temperature, salinity or conductivity, density (computed sigma-t), and possibly dissolved oxygen or transmissivity at specified depth or pressure levels. The University of Alaska, Institute of Marine Science is responsible for these data collected aboard the R/V Alpha Helix on cruises HX123, HX124, HX125, and HX126, between May 5, 1989, and June 10, 1989. These data were collected for the Exxon Oil Spill Monitoring Program and the Gulf of Alaska Recirculation (GARS) Project. Funding was provided by the State of Alaska, Sea Grant, and the National Science Foundation. This data was submitted to NODC earlier. This dataset represents a resubmission due to fact that the earlier version had the wrong offsets applied. Field correction for the STD data was derived by comparing single bottle samples to recorded values from the STD sensors. The field correction is based on 15 samples from a total of 16 stations. The field corrections are: 3000 m CTD temperature mean (Nansen-STD) is 0.00536 and 3000 m CTD salinity mean (Nansen-STD) is -0.04131. Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard High-Resolution STD/CTD Data (F022) format. The Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) data were collected from Gulf of Alaska using Ship ALPHA HELIX during three cruises HX14-HX145. The data was collected over a period spanning from September 11, 1990 to December 16, 1990. Data on a tape containing 148 station observations was submitted by Dr. Chirk Chu, Institute of Marine Science, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, AK. Current components, physical, and other data were collected by moored current meters and CTD casts in the Gulf of Alaska from the ALPHA HELIX and other platforms. Data were collected by the University of Alaska - Fairbanks; Institute of Marine Science (UAK/IMS) from 28 April 1988 to 29 June 1988. Data has been processed by NODC to the standard NODC F015-Current Meter Data (Components) and the F022-CTD High Resolutions formats. This F015 format is used for time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth, and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record comprises values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north and negative directions west and south. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10-15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure, and conductivity or salinity may also be reported.
