Autonomous seawater partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and pH time series from 40 surface buoys between 2004 and 2017 (NCEI Accession 0173932)
This dataset consists of the data synthesis product files that include autonomous seawater pCO2, pH, sea surface temperature and salinity time series measurements from 40 surface buoys between 2004 and 2017. Ship-based time series, some now approaching over three decades long, are critical climate records that have dramatically improved our ability to characterize natural and anthropogenic drivers of ocean carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and biogeochemical processes. Advancements in autonomous ocean carbon observing technology over the last two decades have led to the expansion of fixed time series stations with the added capability of characterizing sub-seasonal variability. Here we present a data product of 40 autonomous moored surface ocean pCO2 and pH time series established between 2004 and 2013. These time series characterize a wide range of seawater pCO2 and pH conditions in different oceanic (17 sites) and coastal (13 sites) regimes including coral reefs (10 sites). With well-constrained daily to interannual variability and an estimate of decadal variability, these data suggest the length of time series necessary to detect an anthropogenic trend in seawater pCO2 and pH varies from 8 to 15 years at the open ocean sites, 16 to 41 years at the coastal sites, and 9 to 22 years at the coral reef sites. Only two open ocean pCO2 time series, WHOTS in the subtropical North Pacific and Stratus in the South Pacific gyre, are longer than the estimated time of emergence, and deseasoned monthly means show anthropogenic trends of 1.9+/-0.3 µatm yr-1 and 1.6+/-0.3 µatm yr-1, respectively. In the future, it is possible that updates to this product will allow for estimating anthropogenic trends at more sites; however, the product currently provides a valuable tool in an accessible format for evaluating climatology and natural variability of surface ocean carbonate chemistry in a variety of regions.

This dataset consists of surface measurements of partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), pH on total scale, water temperature, salinity, and other variables in the Casco Bay, Gulf of Maine from 2015-04-23 to 2020-06-12. The central goal of this project was to install continuous monitoring sensors in Casco Bay to measure ocean and coastal acidification parameters at high temporal resolution. The system was installed at the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) pier in South Portland, Maine. The pier is located in the Portland Channel, an important southern outlet of Casco Bay, and near outlets of the Fore and Presumpscot rivers in a relatively urban area of Casco Bay. This location was selected because it is nearshore, accessible, and has historic nutrient data collected by the Friends of Casco Bay. Sensors for temperature/conductivity/salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH and pCO2 were mounted to a ‘lander’ frame, which was lowered via davit to the bottom. Sensor data were thus collected approximately 1m from the bottom, and at varying depth depending on the tide.

This dataset includes continuous sea surface measurements of partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), sea surface temperature and salinity collected from the Kwakshua Channel (KC) Buoy off the central coast of British Columbia from 2018-05-01 to 2023-05-06. Kwakshua Channel, located near Fitz Hugh Sound on the central coast of British Columbia, has been a site for moored, high-resolution measurements of surface seawater and marine boundary layer CO2 content since May 2018. Measurements of in situ temperature, salinity, seawater and atmospheric CO2 partial pressure are made every 30 minutes using a Battelle Seaology (MApCO2) System. The effort to collect these data are part of the Hakai Institute’s directive to advance the understanding of carbon cycling in northeast Pacific coastal settings with specific emphasis on ocean acidification.

This dataset consists of surface underway measurements collected from the M/V Seaspan Royal as it transited the coastal waters of British Columbia, Canada from 2022-07-01 to 2022-12-20. Seawater was drawn from a depth of 2.5 m to a Sunburst SuperCO2 system and ancillary sensors from Sea-Bird Scientific. Measurements of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen content, and CO2 partial pressure were made every 2 seconds on seawater flowing through the system and instruments, and these data were logged by the SuperCO2 system. Seawater was delivered from the intake to analytical equipment using an AMT 1/2 HP pump (4295-98). Temperature and salinity data were collected using a Fluke thermometer (model 1523) with thermistor probe (model 5610) in the equilibrator, a Sea-Bird SBE 45 MicroTSG Thermosalinograph, and a SBE 38 Digital Oceanographic Thermometer at the seawater intake. Dissolved oxygen content was measured using a SBE63 oxygen optode. Raw oxygen measurements (with salinity reference = 0) were corrected for salt content following the approach provided with the SBE63 Manual revision 010. CO2 measurements were made with a LI-COR LI850 non-dispersive infrared detector housed with the SuperCO2 system. Standardization of the CO2 measurements was achieved through the measurement of four gas standards (Linde; 98.83 ppm, 386.30 ppm, 469.69 ppm, and 1248.45 ppm) that had undergone re-calibration using a zero (N2) and span gas (ESRL; 1567.44 ppm) bracketing the gas standard concentrations. A standardization sequence (measurement of each gas standard sequentially for a period of 90 seconds) was conducted every 4 or 12 hours (over different periods of the data record) and included a 90-second measurement period of atmospheric CO2 partial pressure on air drawn to the system from an intake on the aft deck. The final 20 seconds of atmospheric measurements were retained in the final dataset. Position and weather information (from an Airmax 120WX Weatherstation instrument positioned above the bridge) were logged separately from the SuperCO2 system data, and then merged with the SuperCO2 system data by time-matching the position and weather data to the SuperCO2 system data.
