This dataset contains fish data collected using fish traps and demersal longlines and includes biological data, for some species, such as length and weights. Additional data include the dates, set locations (latitudes, longitudes), depth, water temperature, gear deployed and bait used. These data were collected during the R/V Apalachee cruise AP-1515 from September 29 to September 30, 2015. The objectives of this project included to describe and examine differences in species assemblage and relative abundance of demersal fishes in the Gulf of Mexico.

This dataset reports species caught using longline and trap sets during the R/V Apalachee cruise AP-1415 from October 02 to October 10, 2014. The objectives of this project were 1) to use large chevron traps and demersal longlines to describe and examine differences in the species assemblages and relative abundances of demersal fishes associated with the eastern and western walls of DeSoto Canyon and the adjacent continental slope (75-2000 m deep), 2) to collect liver and bile samples from dominant species to examine spatial and depth-mediated differences in exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 3) to collect muscle tissue from all species for stable isotope analyses including using radiocarbon ratios to examine attenuation of long-term exposure to hydrocarbons, and 4) to collect specimens and samples (including curation of new species) to aid in resolving phylogenetic uncertainties and understanding life history traits in collected taxa. This dataset contains the metadata and sample data associated with these objectives.

Species data includes species name, sex, weight, length, and maturity state, if available. This dataset reports plankton species relative abundances from sites off the Florida Panhandle Bight at the head of DeSoto Canyon. Plankton samples were collected from 16 offshore shelf sites October 24 to October 26, 2011. It includes sites, date/times, length of tow, plankton samples, counts, and the percentage of total plankton represented by each group. Plankton species were categorized as Ceratium spp., Dinophysis spp., other dinoflagellates, Chaetoceros/Bacteriastrum spp., Rhizosolenia/Guinardia spp, Eucampia/Hemiaulus spp., other chain-forming diatoms, Thalassionematales spp., Nitzschioid diatoms, other diatoms, Cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium spp.), and zooplankton.
