Temperature profile, east-west current components, and north-south current components were collected using current meter, mooring, thermistor casts from August 3, 1974 to May 1, 1975. Data were submitted by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as part of the IDOE/POLYMODE (International Decade of Ocean Exploration / combination of USSR POLYGON project). The file format is NODC F015 - Current Meter Data (Components). The F015 format is used for time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth, and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record comprises values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north and negative directions west and south. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10-15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure, and conductivity or salinity may also be reported. A text record is available for optional comments.

Temperature and pressure data were collected using drifting buoy and profiling floats from CHAIN, GILLISS, OCEANUS, and ENDEAVOR from the North Atlantic Ocean from January 10, 1975 to May 31, 1981. Data were submitted by University of Rhode Island; Graduate School of Oceanography in a part of the IDOE/POLYMODE (International Decade of Ocean Exploration / combination of USSR POLYGON project and US MODE). This data set consists of 65 SOFAR float deployments and contains data collected from 1975-81. Included in the documentation is a manuscript titled "SOFAR Float Pilot Studies in the Western North Atlantic 1975-1981- Data Report" by Renee M. O'Gara, H. Thomas Rossby and Diane L. Spain. Technical Report Ref. no. 82-3. This report covers the first 30 floats. Deployments were from the following ships: CHAIN-127, GILLISS 76, OCEANUS-15, ENDEAVOR-07, and ENDEAVOR-13. Floats 32-91 are described in the technical report titled "SOFAR Float Data Report of the Polymode Local Dynamics Experiment", Ref. no. 34-T. These floats were deployed during the R/V GYRE cruise (78-G-6). This research program was funded by the National Science Foundation under grants IDO75-18930, OCE-7818662, OCE-79-26187 and partly by the Office of Naval Research Contract no OO14-76-C-0226. *Note: Although the documentation describes the Deployment of 91 SOFAR floats total, only 65 were actually recovered. Data from the recovered floats and their identification numbers are included in the documentation. Current direction was reported as U/V components; associated temperature and pressure data was reported when possible.

Temperature, depth, salinity, and sigma-T data were collected using STD/CTD casts from OCEANUS in the Atlantic Ocean from June 6, 1978 to June 22, 1978. Data were submitted by University of Washington as part of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration / combination of USSR POLYGON project and US MODE (IDOE/POLYMODE) project. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard High-Resolution STD/CTD Data (F022) format. The F022 format contains high-resolution data collected using CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) and STD (salinity-temperature-depth) instruments. As they are lowered and raised in the oceans, these electronic devices provide nearly continuous profiles of temperature, salinity, and other parameters. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering or obtained by interpolation and may be reported at depth intervals as fine as 1m. Cruise and instrument information, position, date, time and sampling interval are reported for each station. Environmental data at the time of the cast (meteorological and sea surface conditions) may also be reported. The data record comprises values of temperature, salinity or conductivity, density (computed sigma-t), and possibly dissolved oxygen or transmissivity at specified depth or pressure levels. Data may be reported at either equally or unequally spaced depth or pressure intervals. A text record is available for comments.
