Marine Pigments, Productivity, and Associated Chemistry Data Dictionary Release 4.0 from North American Coastline-South from 1965-01-01 to 1992-12-31 (NCEI Accession 9300056)
This dataset consists of Marine Data Dictionary, Release 4.0, including phytoplankton pigments, primary productivity, and associated marine chemistry data collected worldwide from 1,860 stations between January 1965 and December 1992 was submitted by Dr. William Balch, Rosenstiel School of Marine Science, University of Miami in association with the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS). The data contained 52 files and 6,589 records. The data format written by Dr. Balch was designed to archive phytoplankton pigment and productivity data. A hardcopy of the README.TXT file was submitted in with other documentation; it includes a file list, data parameters, record layout, field descriptions, and descriptions of the parameter codes.

These data constitute Release 3.0 of the Marine Pigments, Productivity, and Associated Chemistry Data Dictionary, developed by Dr. William Balch and Mr. Charles Byrne of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, FL. The data format is designed for archiving phytoplankton pigment and productivity data in association with the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study (JGOFS). This version supersedes previous releases of these data. Data were collected during multiple studies world-wide. Parameters include: Date, position, originator, nitrate, phosphate, carbon, chlorophyll, phaeophytin, and other pigments, fluorescence/and or light transmission measurements, methodology, and climate. A complete file listing and the record format is included with the data. 192 files containing 18357 profiles of phytoplankton data were received from NODC's Ocean Climate Laboratory.

The Profiles of Chlorophyll data from NASA Goddard and Phytoplankton wet weight data in this accession was submitted by Mr. Charles R. McClain of US National Aeronautic and Space Administration, Washington DC. The data was collected in 15 different oceans and compiled in SeaWiFS calibration/validation historical pigment database. There are two versions of the data base. One contains approx. 180,000 records for depths of 0-10 meters. A second file contains approx. 330,000 records and includes all available depths provided by the individual investigators. Detailed Documentation is available for data format. Marine toxic substance and other data was collected in the Gulf of Mexico between 1975 and 1978. The data is available in the F144 format of NODC for Marine Toxic Substances and other formats. The F144 format contains data on ambient concentrations of toxic substances and other pollutants in the marine environment. The data derive from laboratory analyses of samples of water, sediment, or marine organisms. Samples may have been collected near marine discharge sites or during ocean monitoring surveys of large areas. Field observations of tar deposits on beaches may also be reported. Survey information includes platform type, start and end dates, and investigator and institution. If data are collected near a discharge site, discharge location, depth, distance to shore, average volume, and other characteristics are reported. Position, date, time and environmental conditions are reported for each sample station. Environmental data may include meteorological and sea surface conditions, tide stage and height, depth of the thermocline or mixed layer surface temperature and salinity, and wave height and periods. Sample characteristics, collection methods, and laboratory techniques are reported for each sample collected and analyzed. The data record comprises concentration values (or a code to indicate trace amounts) for each chemical substance analyzed. Chemical substances are identified by codes based on the registry numbers assigned by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) of the American Chemical Society. Marine organisms from which samples have been taken are identified using the 12-digit NODC Taxonomic Code. A text record is available for optional comments.
