CTD casts (temperature, salinity, oxygen, fluorescence, turbidity, SUNA Nitrate), and nutrient and salinity bottle samples collected from Norseman II in Bering Strait and Southern Chukchi Sea from 2022-09-09 to 2022-09-15 (NCEI Accession 0289672)
This is an archive of CTD data and Niskin bottle samples from the 2022 Bering Strait mooring cruise. The cruise was funded by the NSF-Arctic Observing Network grants: - PLR-1758565 (PIs: Woogate and Peralta-Ferriz). - PLR-2153942 (PIs: Woogate and Peralta-Ferriz). The data are from a ~ 12 day cruise - on the US vessel Norseman II - from 8th - 19th Sept 2022 - sailing from and to Nome, Alaska, USA - to the Bering Strait and southern Chukchi Sea. The cruise was also to service oceanographic moorings in the strait and those data are archived separately. This is an archive of both hydrographic and bottle data. A total of 111 science casts (125 including test casts) were taken and are included in this archive. Water samples were taken for salinity (20) and nutrients (169) from the CTD rosette and these data are included in this archive. A separate pumping system was used to take trace metal (and accompanying nutrient) samples during this cruise (lead: Laramie Jensen). These data are archived separately. Stations were taken in US waters near mooring locations and on sections in the Bering Strait and southern Chukchi Sea. See cruise report, accompanying event log and data headers for map, station locations, calibration, and processing details. The data are taken using an SBE9-11plus system, recording - pressure - temperature (dual system) - conductivity (dual system) - oxygen (dual system) - fluorescence - turbidity connected also to an - SUNA nitrate sensor, recording both internally and with the CTD data. A total of 169 samples were taken for nutrients, on 35 casts, to map nutrient properties in the Bering Strait and southern Chukchi Sea region. A total of 20 samples were taken for salinity on 5 casts, to check bottle firing protocols. For an overview of previous and on-going Bering Strait mooring work and details of the measurements and their interpretation, please see PI web site and suggested references in the Documentation. This archive is of data from 150 CTD casts taken during the 2013 Norseman II cruise to the Bering Strait. For positions, see file headers or the cruise report accompanying these data. Data were preliminary processed at sea, as per cruise report, and bottle files were obtained from this processing. Subsequently, significant issues were found with the data as regards to lack of reliability of salinity and oxygen on the downcasts. A reprocessing attempts to address these issues. (Bottle data were not reprocessed.) This archive includes: 1) the raw data files (.hdr, .hex. and .XMLCON) for each cast, so the user may reprocess the data to their own standards, 2) 2db average UPCAST data for each cast, as per Oct 2015 data processing. As will be discussed below, these data provide (we believe) the most reliable salinity and oxygen data (although note no oxygen or salinity samples were taken for validation), 3) the 2db resolution reflects uncertainty in the depth of the data as the upcast data are being used, 4) casts with particularly suspect salinity data at times of sharp temperature gradients (Casts 83, 90,91,94,100,101,103) are placed in a subdirectory, and 5) the .ros and .btl bottle data as obtained from the processing at sea. We encourage those seeking parameters to match bottle samples to consider also the 2db averaged cast data. A summary of know problems include: 1) salinity values at times of sharp temperature gradient and 2) salinity and oxygen values on the downcasts.
