Data for Determining Age of Barrow's Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica) from External Characteristics, Alaska and Canada, 2007-2015

These data describe an exercise in which known age and sex class of 100 Barrow’s goldeneyes (Bucephala islandica), determined by expert examination bursa and plumage, was contrasted with age and sex classes estimated from photos by trained observers.

These data provide information in support of the creation of a bioenergetic model to estimate winter prey consumption by Barrow’s Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica). One table consists of mass and morphological measurements of wintering Barrow’s Goldeneyes captured or collected in Alaska and British Columbia from 1996 to 2015. The second table consists of size classes of Pacific blue mussels (Mytilus trossulus) consumed by Barrow’s Goldeneye that were collected in Prince William Sound, Alaska in 1996.

This dataset consists of five tables, 1) shorebird morphological measurements collected from various species captured from 1895-2021, 2) taxonomy, 3) contributors, 4) sampling locations, and 5) cross-reference publications. In addition, photographs of plumage patterns are available for several species. Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey - Alaska Science Center, along with collaborators from many government agencies and research institutions, have studied shorebirds at numerous sites across North America, the Pacific Ocean, Australia, and New Zealand. This release includes over 10,000 observations relating to 35 shorebird species.

This dataset consists of shorebird chick measurements (wing, primary feather 10, diagonal tarsus, and bill length) and body mass for various shorebird species captured in Alaska and Canada during 1978-2022. Researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey - Alaska Science Center, and collaborators from many government agencies and research institutions have studied shorebirds at numerous sites across North America. This release includes over 2,000 observations relating to 17 shorebird species.
