AFSC/REFM: Seabird Necropsy dataset of North Pacific
The seabird necropsy dataset contains information on seabird specimens that were collected under salvage and scientific collection permits primarily by NMFS-certified fisheries observers deployed by the Pacific Islands Regional Office Observer Program to shallow and deep set pelagic longline fisheries operating in North Pacific waters and fisheries observers deployed by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center Observer Program to groundfish demersal longline, pot, and trawl fisheries in waters off Alaska. The database includes Magnuson-Act protected data on the precise date and location where the specimen was collected and publicly available information on the results of the necropsy work. This includes a suite of data including age class, sex, morphometrics, plumage characteristics, body condition, tissue samples, and plastics ingestion. Food habits are completed as a parallel program.

Data pertains to birds captured (live) or collected (lethally) including, bird identification numbers, sampling dates, geographic locations, body measurements, diets (from either stomach contents or regurgitated prey), and sex and age of the bird when discernible. Common Murres (Uria aalge) and Black-legged Kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) were captured from their breeding colonies in lower Cook Inlet, Alaska, 2016-2023. Kittiwakes, murres, Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus glaucescens) and Horned Puffins (Fratercula corniculata) were collected in Prince William Sound, Cook Inlet, and Unalaska.

More than 14,000 dead seabirds were reported and a total of 117 carcasses were examined. 92 cases had emaciation identified as the Cause Of Death (COD), seven cases where COD was undetermined, and 17 cases where COD was determined as "Other", which included predation, trauma, encephalitis, peritonitis, and bacterial infection. Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (n=4) and saxitoxin (n=15) were also detected; however, the virus and biotoxin were not determined to be the COD except for one case in 2020 where saxitoxin toxicosis was suspected.

The data provided here relate to observations of marine birds and mammals observed during at-sea surveys throughout the North Pacific including the Arctic Ocean, Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea, Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, and Barents Sea. This data release contains 5 tables including observation data, survey locations, taxonomic designations of observed birds and mammals, summary information about each dataset added to the database, and a table showing changes made to the database from version 4.0 to 4.1.

This data set contains biological resource data for alcids, shorebirds, waterfowl, diving birds, pelagic birds, gulls, and terns in Southeast Alaska. Points in this data set represent locations of bird nesting sites. Species-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in relational data tables (described below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. See also the BIRDS (Bird Polygons) data layer, part of the larger Southeast Alaska ESI database, for additional bird information.This data set comprises a portion of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data for Southeast Alaska. ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Ecosystems & Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (EcoFOCI) is an effort by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and associated academic scientists. Eco-FOCI’s goal is to understand the effects of abiotic and biotic variability on ecosystems of the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. This cruise is in support of research sponsored by NOAA’s North Pacific Climate Regimes & Ecosystem Productivity Program, the North Pacific Research Board (NPRB), and PMEL/AFSC base. The research conducted on this cruise is part of the NPRB’s Gulf of Alaska- Integrated Ecosystem Research Program (GOA-IERP) Lower Trophic Level Project (LTL) component. The Program intends to increase our understanding of how five target fish taxa (walleye pollock, Pacific cod, arrowtooth flounder, sablefish, and Pacific Ocean perch) pass through the larval gauntlet and eventually recruit as adults. The Lower Trophic Level Component is one of four major components to the overall project (Lower Trophic Levels, Middle Trophic Levels, Upper Trophic level, Modeling. An additional major goals of the overall project s to compare and contrast the mechanisms responsible for recruitment of fish species between the eastern and northern portions of the Gulf of Alaska. While many mechanisms controlling on shelf and cross-shelf fluxes in the two regions are likely similar, we expect there are also distinct differences between the narrow shelf of EGOA and the broader down welling dominated shelf of WGOA. Our three primary objectives for each region are to quantify, compare and contrast (1) the timing and magnitude of the different cross-shelf exchange mechanisms, using an extensive suite of oceanographic (i.e. moorings, drifters, cruises) and atmospheric measurements, (2) how these physical mechanisms influence the distribution, timing and magnitude of phytoplankton productivity, and (3) how both transport and primary productivity control the distribution, productivity, and fate of both zooplankton and ichthyoplankton.
