Approach Surface Precision
The dataset provides information on airport approach surfaces. The approach surface is longitudinally centered on the extended runway centerline and extends outward and upward from each end of the primary surface. An approach surface is applied to the end of each runway based upon the type of approach available. (Slopes can vary from 20:1, 34:1, 40:1 or 50:1).

The dataset provides information on the primary surfaces of Iowa airports. The primary surface extends 200 feet beyond each end of the runway, but when the runway has no specially prepared hard surface, the surface ends at the end of that runway.
Horizontal Surface

The dataset provides information on the horizontal surfaces of Iowa airports. The horizontal surface is a plane 150’ above the established airport elevation. The perimeter of which is constructed by swinging arcs of specified radii from the center of each end of the primary surface and connecting adjacent arcs by lines tangent to those arcs.

The 6716 runways in the dataset are runways associated with the 19721 airports in the companion airport data set. This geospatial data is derived from the FAA's National Airspace System Resource Aeronautical Data Product (Effective 17 March 2013).
