Synthetic Organic Compounds in Biota in Lake Mead National Recreation Area near Las Vegas, Nevada
This dataset presents the results of analysis of aquatic biota tissue samples, collected at 2 sites (Las Vegas Bay and Overton Arm) in 2013 and 2 sites (Las Vegas Bay, Boulder Basin, and Overton Arm) in 2014 in Lake Mead National Recreational Area. The tissue samples were analyzed for concentrations of more than 250 compounds and congeners of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (DDT and its degradates), wastewater chemicals, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC) in Columbia, Missouri. Analysis methods include low-resolution, high-resolution, and full spectrum mass spectrometry and high-resolution gas chromatography. Data are presented in a spreadsheet with 15 worksheets containing analyte results and quality control information and a summary table suitable for principal component analysis (PCA).

This dataset presents the results of passive water sampling conducted at 2 sites in 2013 and 3 sites in 2014 in Lake Mead National Recreational Area. Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) and Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) were deployed in Las Vegas Bay and Overton Arm in 2013 and Las Vegas Bay, Boulder Basin, and Overton Arm in 2014. The samplers were analyzed for concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorines (DDT-type compounds and their degradates), polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), waste indicators (WW), and yeast estrogen screen (YES) by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC) in Columbia, Missouri. This dataset presents the results of analysis of aquatic biota tissue samples, collected over multiple sampling events from in from 2007 to 2014 at three sites (Las Vegas Bay, Overton Arm, and Boulder Basin) in Lake Mead National Recreational Area. The tissue samples were analyzed for concentrations of Carbon 13 and Nitrogen 15 isotopes by the University of California, Davis in Davis, California. Data are presented in 1 spreadsheet worksheet that is organized by year, location, and taxa. General trophic level (Vander Zanden and Rasmussen, 1999) and calculations of benthic reliance (Umek and others, 2010) also are included. Combined data from sampling events in 2007 and 2008 previously were published in Umek and others, 2010. Common species names are used in the spreadsheet and scientific names can be found in the metadata.

The data presented include concentrations of 122 organic, 23 inorganic constituents, and estrogenicity in water collected from 13 off-stream non-point source sites (natural and created wetlands) and eight on-stream point source sites (streams and impoundments) in the New Jersey Pinelands, 2017-2020. Native and non-native fish health data collected from the on-stream sites as well as native frog data collected from the off-stream sites are also included. For the on-stream point-source component, we analyzed water chemistry, hormone activity, and collected native and non-native fish from two locations upstream and one downstream from two municipal wastewater treatment plants (six total sites) and from two minimally impacted locations to serve as reference conditions. For the off-stream non-point source component, we analyzed water chemistry, hormone activity, and collected Green Frogs (Lithobates clamitans) from eight stormwater basins and ponds embedded in altered landscapes and five ponds surrounded by forest land to serve as reference sites. Animals were assessed histologically for measures of endocrine disruption and surface water was analyzed for hormone activity and known or suspected endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) including hormones, phytoestrogens, waste indicator compounds and some metals.

This data set contains the concentration results for water- and sediment-quality and tissue samples, as well as associated quality-assurance data, collected at sampling locations located in the Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Samples were collected between 2012 and 2013. Samples were analyzed for nutrients, hormones, pharmaceutical, wastewater indicator compounds and pesticides, at the U.S. Geological Survey, National Water Quality Laboratory and the Organic Chemistry Research Laboratory, Sacramento, California. Bioassay analyses were performed at the National Fish Health Laboratory in Kearneysville, West Virginia. Data is also archived in the National Water Information System database (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis).

This dataset includes field measurements and laboratory analyses of surface water, bottom water (sediment-water interface), surficial (0-2 cm) sediment, pore water (0-2 cm), and biota collected in Lake Combie, California, from September 2017 through August 2021. The study area includes six sites within the reservoir where discrete samples of surface water, bottom water, sediment, and pore water were taken along the length of the reservoir at the following distances from the spillway: 0.07 miles, 0.5 miles, 0.9 miles, 1.2 miles, 1.3 miles, and 1.4 miles. The within-reservoir sites were sampled during September 2017, February 2018, and May 2018, prior to a large sediment removal operation, and again during September 2019, February 2020, and June 2020 following the removal operation. Zooplankton samples were collected at four of the six sites during the sampling period. Fish were collected from within two regions of the lake: in the Wooley Creek arm of the lower reservoir, and in the upper reservoir near the targeted area for sediment removal operations. Vertical profiles of water quality were measured with a multi-parameter sonde during water collection events and during one zooplankton event. Thirty-six surface water and thirty-six bottom water samples were collected at each site and analyzed for total mercury (filtered and particulate), methylmercury (filtered and particulate), total suspended solids, sulfate, chloride, selected dissolved nutrients, particulate 13-C/12-C and 15-N/14-N isotopic ratios, total particulate carbon and nitrogen, particulate carbon to nitrogen molar ratio, dissolved organic carbon, and dissolved organic-matter properties (absorption and fluorescence). Thirty-six bed-sediment samples were analyzed for total mercury, methylmercury, total reduced sulfur, and organic content. Pore water extracted from bed sediment was analyzed for filtered total mercury, filtered methylmercury, sulfate, chloride, selected dissolved nutrients, and dissolved organic carbon. Surface water, bottom water, and sediment collections included an additional four field replicates each for analysis - pore water had six replicates. One hundred six zooplankton samples and twenty-three replicates were analyzed for total mercury, methylmercury, 13-C/12-C isotopic ratio, and 15-N/14-N isotopic ratio. Two hundred ninety fish samples were analyzed for total mercury, methylmercury, 13-C/12-C isotopic ratio, 15-N/14-N isotopic ratio, and total mass carbon and nitrogen. Water-quality field measurements made with a multi-parameter sonde included water temperature, barometric pressure, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity. The within-reservoir data includes seven data tables given as both machine readable tab-delimited text (*.txt) and Excel formats (*.xlsx): 1) DataDictionary_LCR17-21, the data dictionary, which provides definitions and details related to the six other data tables, and includes citations of analytical methods; 2) SurfWater_Field-Lab_LCR17-20, the surface water and bottom water data table; 3) Sediment_LCR17-20; 4) PoreWater_LCR17-20; 5) Zooplankton_LCR17-20; 6) Fish_LCR18-21; and 7) SurfWater_Profiles_LCR17-20.
Biomass and methylmercury concentrations in biweekly biological samples from Brownlee and Oxbow Reservoir outflows, Snake River Hells Canyon Complex (Idaho-Oregon), 2018-2019

This dataset describes biomass and methylmercury concentrations in zooplankton, other invertebrates, fish, and coarse and fine detritus samples collected at the outflow locations of Brownlee and Oxbow Reservoirs in the Snake River Hells Canyon Complex. Based on the sampling locations, the sampled materials were presumed to have flowed through the dam turbines or over the spillway, thereby representing biological export from the reservoirs. Samples were collected biweekly at each location over a sixteen-month period, June 2018 – September 2019. Sampling and analysis methods are described in the Processing Steps section of the metadata.

The Marcellus Shale Energy and Environmental Laboratory (MSEEL) field site in Morgantown, WV was established by West Virginia University in order to increase understanding of factors that affect resource recovery and environmental impacts from unconventional oil and gas development. The site, which is located in the Morgantown Industrial Park (MIP) adjacent to the Monongahela River, includes one well pad which hosts four horizontal gas wells that target the Marcellus Shale approximately 7400 ft below ground level. As part of the MSEEL study, the MIP 5H well was drilled in 2015. Water samples were collected from the holding pond used to hydraulically fracture the MIP 5H well (API 47-061-01699), and a time series of produced water samples were collected from the MIP 5H separator tank starting in 2016 when the well was opened for flowback and ending in 2019. This data release includes semi-quantitative analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) identified in these water samples as well as a list of non-target compounds that were identified via gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry analysis and subsequent spectral matching against mass spectral libraries.

This dataset describes site location information for samples collected within the western National Parks, USA, (Arches National Park (NP), Bryce Canyon NP, Canyonlands NP, Capitol Reef NP, Dinosaur National Monument (NM), Hovenweep NM, Timpanogos Cave NM, and Zion NP) for water chemistry analyses. Water-quality and bed-sediment samples were analyzed for contaminants of emerging concern at the National Water Quality Laboratory, Denver, Colorado, and Region 8 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency laboratory in Golden, Colorado. Additionally, quality assurance and quality control results are summarized.
