Dataset of Flathead Chub abundance and important streamflow metrics from the Fountain Creek Basin, Colorado, USA, 2003-2016
These data were used for an analysis as part of a long-term project monitoring the biological communities, habitat, and water quality of the Fountain Creek Basin. Biology, habitat, and water quality data have been collected at 10 sites starting in 2003. These data include annual samples of aquatic invertebrate communities, fish communities, water quality, and quantitative riverine habitat collected from 2003-2016. These data will provide insight into trends in biological communities from 2003-2016 and relationships between biological communities and abiotic variables (antecedent streamflow, physical habitat, and water quality). This USGS data release contains all the input and output data and files necessary to reproduce results of the report describing an analysis of ecological trends from 2003-2016 in the Fountain Creek Basin, Colorado, USA (https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20175162). Data preparation of these data files is fully described in the report mentioned previously. These data include the relative abundance of Flathead Chub at two sites and important streamflow metrics of peak streamflow patterns.

Humpback chub (Gila cypha) and mean daily water temperature data, western Grand Canyon - 2000 to 2016

These data were compiled to examine patterns of humpback chub (Gila cypha) in western Grand Canyon from just below Havasu Creek at river kilometer (rkm) 253 (Lees Ferry is rkm 0) downriver to Pearce Ferry at rkm 451. These data represent mean daily water temperatures in degrees Celsius from two USGS gaging locations (2005-2016), catches of individual humpback chub in hoop nets (2005-2016), total lengths of individual humpback chub captured in hoop nets during 2014, 2015 and 2016, and the effort (number of seine hauls) and catch of humpback chub in seines (2000-2016) in the Colorado River. These data were collected by research staff from the Grand Canyon, Monitoring & Research Center, Southwest Biological Science Center during field observations from 2000 to 2016. These data can be used to identify trends in humpback chub catch rates in the mainstem Colorado River downstream of Glen Canyon Dam in Grand Canyon. Long-term monitoring data from both hoop nets and seining was used to document likely local recruitment and population expansion of humpback chub in western Grand Canyon.

These data were compiled for a manuscript entitled 'Vital rates of a burgeoning population of Humpback Chub in western Grand Canyon. Objective(s) of our study were to compare survival and growth of humpback chub in western Grand Canyon to that from the more established metapopulation in eastern Grand Canyon that spawns in the Little Colorado River (LCR). These data represent capture histories of fish based on mark-recapture data. These data were collected in eastern Grand Canyon (CR-east study site) and in the western Grand Canyon (CR-west study site). The CR-east reach sites are located at the lower 13.56 rkm of the LCR and in the mainstem of the Colorado River at river kilometers (rkm) 126.2-128.7 (2009-2016) and was expanded to rkm 125-130.4 in 2017-2022, and the CR-west site is located 363-368.5 river kilometers downstream of Glen Canyon Dam. For the Von Bertalanffy growth analysis, data were collected from 330-410 rkm downstream of Glen Canyon Dam for capture histories and growth data, respectively. These data were collected by the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (U.S. Geological Survey-Southwest Biological Science Center) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Fish were implanted with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags that allowed for individual identification upon future recapture and these data allow us to construct capture histories for individual fish and fit mark-recapture models. These data can be used to estimate survival, growth, abundance, and movement of humpback chub in eastern and western Grand Canyon.

Multimetric Index macroinvertebrate values from the Fountain Creek Basin, Colorado, 2005–2016

These data have been collected as part of a cooperative project in between the U.S. Geological Survey Colorado Water Science Center, Colorado Springs Utility, and Colorado Springs Engineering. This project began in 2005 and has collected macroinvertebrate samples from Fountain Creek and its tributaries to monitor the biological condition of this watershed. Provided in this data release are Multimetric Index (MMI) values of aquatic macroinvertebrate assemblages using four different sampling methods. There are two subsets of these data included: (1) MMI values of macroinvertebrate data collected from 2010 to 2012 at 15 sites as part of an invertebrate sample method comparison Scientific Investigations Report (SIR) titled “Comparability among Four Invertebrate Sampling Methods and the Recalibrated Multimetric Index Values, Fountain Creek Basin, Colorado, 2010 – 2012”, and (2) all the MMI values from macroinvertebrate data collected at 34 sites from 2005 to 2016. This USGS data release contains all the data and files to reproduce results of the SIR. Data preparation of these data files is fully described in the SIR.
