The Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA) mandated by the Secretary of Interior to report to the President on the wilderness suitability of lands managed by the Bureau of land Management (BLM) by October 21, 1991. This report is the result of a comprehensive study of public lands in Idaho by the Bureau of Land Management regarding the suitability of these lands for wilderness designation. ,BLM Lands Inventoried for Wilderness Characteristics is consistent with Section 201 of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (FLPMA), which requires the Secretary of the Interior to “prepare and maintain on a continuing basis an inventory of all public lands and their resource and other values,” and the BLM Land Use Planning Handbook, BLM Colorado has identified and begun an assessment of BLM-managed lands with wilderness characteristics outside of existing WSAs. BLM Manual 6310 - Conducting Wilderness Characteristics Inventory on BLM Lands, provides the guidance from which BLM Colorado performs the wilderness characteristic inventory process.,

They are part of the National Conservation Lands (otherwise known as National Landscape Conservation System). These polygon features represent the outside boundaries of the BLM Wilderness Study Areas in Colorado. Please note other agency or private lands may exist within these boundaries.
