Buoy - California - Wind Sentinel (130), Morro Bay - Processed Data
**Overview** The purpose of the dataset is to provide preliminary filtered, averaged buoy data and standardize the data format of various data streams from the buoy into NetCDF. The attached Lidar Buoy Data Dictionary provides further details on the various instruments mounted on the buoys, parameters measured by each instrument, and the frequency of data collection. **Data Details** Surface meteorology instrument directions are not correct for majority of the deployment because faulty inertial measurement unit (IMU) data was used for heading calculations. These directions will be reprocessed using the high frequency GX5-45 IMU data at the end of the campaign and the directions will be updated. **Data Quality** Standard filtering thresholds on the averaged data were applied and several data format issues of the raw data were streamlined to create a standardized NetCDF format data. **Uncertainty** The uncertainty of data has not been analyzed, but it is not expected to deviate from instrument technical specifications.

California - Auxiliary Datasets for Buoy (120), Humboldt / Derived Data

**Overview** This dataset compiles results from different model-based hindcasts and instruments that measure environmental variables at the location of the associated lidar buoys. This dataset complements the lidar buoy measurements by providing longer time histories of selected environmental parameters. The data were extracted from the closest grid point to the average lidar buoy position. The data were obtained from the public domain and references to the originators/owners are provided under each instrument.
California - Quality-Controlled Reanalysis and Observational Data for Buoy (130), Morro Bay / Derived Data

**Overview** This collection provides spatiotemporally paired reanalysis and satellite data to supplement the lidar buoy observations during the California deployments. Point time series of observed and reanalysis data are provided, using inverse distance weighting to geolocate the reanalysis data to the buoy location. Gridded time series of reanalysis data are provided, covering the California coast and extending into the Pacific Ocean. Satellite data in the coastal California region are also provided. The reanalysis collection includes the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2), the Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2), the North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR), the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis version 5 (ERA5), and the analysis system of the Rapid Refresh (RAP). The satellite data collection is that of Ribal and Young (2019). All datasets are publicly available with the sources provided in the References section. **Data Quality** The observations provided are the processed versions buoy/buoy.z06.a0 and buoy/lidar.z06.a0. In December 2020, the developers of MERRA-2 and ERA5 reported issues with some months covering the buoy deployment period related to warm sea surface temperature biases and assimilation of anomalous snow depth observations, respectively. This collection includes only the reprocessed versions of MERRA-2 and ERA5 that have addressed the issues.

**Overview** This is the data collected during the validation period. The buoy is scheduled to be deployed near Martha's Vinyard in mid-January 2020. Data collected from buoy instruments are contained in two files labeled “primary” and secondary.” Header information for these files can be found in the respective tabs in the Excel spreadsheet under Attachments. **Data Details** Add some documentation about buoy data files here.

"rtd" files are ~1 second data. "gyro" files are buoy movement data. 7z is the new archive format, providing high compression ratio. The main features of 7z format: Open architecture High compression ratio Strong AES-256 encryption Ability of using any compression, conversion or encryption method Supporting files with sizes up to 16000000000 GB Unicode file names Solid compressing Archive headers compressing 7z has open architecture, so it can support any new compression methods. https://www.7-zip.org/7z.html **Data Quality** Additional meta data to follow. PNNL recommends adding 180 degrees to the lidar wind directions at Morro Bay, as there is a directional issue associated with GPS cables being swapped on the buoy during buoy commissioning. The 180 degrees offset is going to be very close to our final post-processed data, that will be uploaded at the end of the campaign in September or November 2021.
