Historical Channel Positions and Alluvial Fan Extents for the Lower 10 Kilometers of the Snow River Flood Plain Near Seward, Alaska
The USGS mapped main channels and alluvial fan extents in the lower 10 kilometers of the Snow River flood plain near Seward, Alaska as part of an assessment of river channel stability under an outburst flood regime. Channels and fan extents were mapped from aerial photographs and satellite imagery dating from 1951 to 2019.

This dataset includes the input (raw survey data, computational mesh, hydrologic boundary conditions) and output data for a 2-dimensional hydraulic and sediment transport model of the lower Snow River flood plain near Seward, Alaska. Four outburst flood scenarios were simulated, including 3 historical floods and one hypothetical larger flood. The methods of deriving these datasets and using them to calculate scour are described in the associated USGS Scientific Investigations Report "Recent history of glacial outburst floods, analysis of channel changes, and development of a 2-dimensional flow and sediment transport model of the Snow River near Seward, Alaska".

This dataset presents a delineation of the maximum extent of fluvial occupation detectable from vegetation patterns at Exit and Paradise Creeks in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska for 1950 conditions. This comprehensive 1950 surface includes the active braid plain, taken as the suite of wetted channels and largely unvegetated intervening bars (Curran and McTeague, 2011), the inactive braid plain, considered here as vegetated formerly occupied channels and bars still accessible by braiding without substantial bank erosion, and surfaces occupied by former glacier drainage but potentially no longer accessible by braiding. For simplicity, this surface also includes isolated non-fluvial features such as bedrock or moraines stranded within the fluvial features.Limited photo resolution and lack of elevation data precluded differentiating the active and inactive surfaces.
