Geospatial data for the Vegetation Mapping Inventory Project of Cape Lookout National Seashore
The files linked to this reference are the geospatial data created as part of the completion of the baseline vegetation inventory project for the NPS park unit. Current format is ArcGIS file geodatabase but older formats may exist as shapefiles. Twenty-two map classes were developed to map the vegetation and general land cover of Cape Lookout and surrounding areas. These maps included the following: 13 map classes representing natural/semi-natural vegetation at the association level in the National Vegetation Classification System (NVCS), one map class representing cultural vegetation (e.g., developed) in the NVCS, and eight map classes representing non-vegetated units (e.g., open water bodies, buildings, roads, etc.). Features were interpreted using 1:12,000 scale digital color-infrared aerial photography (flown 31 May 2009) through heads-up-digitizing in ArcGIS (Version 10.0, © 2010 Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, California). Polygons were mapped to a 0.5- hectare minimum mapping unit (MMU). A geodatabase containing various feature class layers and tables show the locations of vegetation types and general land cover (vegetation map), vegetation plot samples, AA sites, project boundary extent, and aerial photographic centers.

A dichotomous field key was developed for these vegetation map classes to assist with field recognition and classification. The vegetation map covers 10,833 ha (26,769 ac) of Cape Cod National Seashore. The most abundant forest vegetation association is Pitch Pine - Oak Forest, which covers 1,756 ha (4,339 ac).

Collectively, the CAHA spatial database layer is composed of 2,437 polygons covering 11,749 ha, with an average polygon size of 8.5 ha. Map classes representing natural/semi-natural types in the NVCS apply to 1,924 polygons (79.0% of all polygons) covering 7,401.6 ha (63.0 % of entire area) with an average polygon size of 3.6 ha. Of these natural/semi-natural types, the Atlantic Coast Interdune Swale dominates, both in frequency of polygons (488), and in size (2,050 ha). Needlerush High Marsh is also a widespread association with 408 polygons covering 1,279.9 ha. Non-vegetated areas (including developed areas and water) consist of 513 polygons (21.1% of all polygons) and cover 4,347.9 ha (37.0% of the entire area). Developed areas in the park include the NPS Visitor Center and maintenance buildings, roads, private residences, and commercial buildings. Wetlands consist of 1881 polygons (77.1% of all polygons) and cover 8,148 ha (69.3% of entire area). Wetland areas consist non-vegetated areas such as the ocean, sound, and ponds in addition to vegetated polygons.Vegetation associations in the NVCS that are considered wetlands according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service include the following: Maritime Red Bay Shrub Swamp, Coastal Loblolly Pine Wetland Forest, Atlantic Coast Stiff Dogwood Dune Swale, Atlantic Coast Interdune Swale, Groundsel-tree – Maritime Marsh Elder Tidal Shrubland Alliance, Seaside Oxeye Tidal Shrub Flat, Chestnut Fimbry – Common Threesquare Seasonally Flooded Herbaceous Vegetation, Southern Cattail – Giant Foxtail Herbaceous Vegetation, Tidal Sawgrass Marsh, Needlerush High Marsh, Reed Tidal Marsh, Southern Atlantic Coast Salt Marsh, and Mid-Atlantic High Salt Marsh.

A final vegetation map for Canaveral NS was created to represent the vegetation occurring within the park during 2012. This product represents the final of four steps necessary to produce an accurate vegetation map based upon aerial photographs. This includes the determination of the community element global (CEGL) codes (2008) and acquisition of aerial imagery (2012), using the aerial imagery, with five ground truthing points (2014), to create a draft vegetation map, performing an accuracy assessment (2016), and then using all the available information to create a final vegetation map.

Current format is ArcGIS file geodatabase but older formats may exist as shapefiles. Converting delineations to a digital format involved four main procedures: a) preparation of manuscript maps b) input of the spatial data: c) populating of the attribute tables, and d) conversion to GIS. Each step included many quality control steps. Maps were prepared by pin-registering a clean sheet of mylar to each photo and transferring delineations to the new overlay in ink. Each manuscript map was edgematched to the adjoining sheet. Each photo was numbered, and each polygon on the photo was numbered in sequence. An attribute table was created containing a field each for the photo number, polygon sequence number, land use code, layer number, stature type, height, density, and floristic composition attributes.
