Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zoning Act (1972) and the Seismic Hazards Mapping Act (1990) direct the State Geologist to delineate regulatory "Zones of Required Investigation" to reduce the threat to public health and safety and to minimize the loss of life and property posed by earthquake-triggered ground failures. Cities and counties affected by the zones must regulate certain development "projects" within them. These Acts also require sellers of real property (and their agents) within a mapped hazard zone to disclose at the time of sale that the property lies within such a zone. NOTE: Fault Evaluation Reports are available for those areas covered by a Regulatory Map however there are reports available for areas outside the Regulatory map boundary. The Susceptibility to Deep-Seated Landslides map covers the entire state of California and was originally published in May of 2011 as CGS Map Sheet 58. It made use of several data layers of varying scales and formats, such as Landslide Inventory, Geology, Rock Strength, and Slope. For the statewide analysis of landslide susceptibility, the methodology of Wilson and Keefer (1985) was used in combining the rock strength and slope data layers as implemented by Ponti, el al. (2008) to create classes of landslide susceptibility (0 to 10, low to high). These classes express the generalization that on very low slopes, landslide susceptibility is low even in weak materials, and that landslide susceptibility increases with slope and in weak rocks.

This is a digital Seismic Hazard Zone Map presenting areas where liquefaction and landslides may occur during a strong earthquake. Three types of geological hazards, referred to as seismic hazard zones, may be featured on the map: 1) liquefaction, 2) earthquake-induced landslides, and 3) overlapping liquefaction and earthquake-induced landslides. In addition, a fourth feature may be included representing areas not evaluated for liquefaction or earthquake-induced landslides. Developers of properties falling within any of the three zones may be required to investigate the potential hazard and mitigate its threat during the local permitting process.
